• Robert Diack: Lost Villages CD Release!

The Rex Hotel 194 Queen St W, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

    Patrick O'Reilly: guitar
    Jacob Thompson: piano
    Brandon Davis: bass
    Robert Diack: drums

The Lost Villages were a collection of nine communities and townships in Southern Ontario. The people therein were forcibly removed to make way for the St. Laurence Seaway, a 1950’s project which linked Southern Ontario to the Atlantic Ocean by a collection of waterways. The houses are submerged underwater, as the places where there once was human community there are now lakes.

The album Lost Villages, which shares its name with the communities discussed above, was written with that inspiration of upheaval, however, the composition is grounded in and inspired by its own local geography; it is a product of the environment it was created in (largely composed in Southern Ontario, and Toronto). The writing of the album is extensively inspired by “post-rock” elements, and uses large scale repetitions and layering. These elements, when blended with those of jazz (and post-bop) synthesize into wholly new formulation of musical style. Citing influences from Godspeed You Black Emperor, Aaron Parks, and Philip Glass, the material is a fluid and flexible musical exploration.

Robert Diack is a drummer and composer from Toronto Canada. Robert has studied music exten- sively in Toronto, with over fteen years of learning in various institutions across the city. Composing for many years, he draws his influence from jazz and post-bop, to folk and traditional, to post-rock and pop music.

The repertoire comes exclusively courtesy of TJO Artistic Director Josh Grossman - compositions and arrangements created over the past 8 years. • Aaron Shragge & Ben Monder – ‘This World of Dew’ CD Release: NYC

Jazz Gallery 1160 Broadway, New York, NY, United States

Aaron Shragge: Dragon Mouth Trumpet, Flugelhorn, Shakuhachi
    Ben Monder: Guitar

This World of Dew is Aaron Shragge’s third release with Ben Monder.

The duo project, an exploratory, meditative collaboration, has been praised as “…lyrical and heartwarming…” (Jazz Times) and “thoroughly modern with a definitive sound…” (The Birmingham Times).

The album features guitarist Ben Monder’s otherworldly harmonic virtuosity in expansive sonic textures that highlight Shragge’s subtle and distinctive lyrical voice on the shakuhachi and dragon mouth trumpet (a custom microtonal instrument).

The fourteen new compositions by Shragge are inspired by the writings of both ancient and modern poets: Kobayashi Issa, Matsuo Bashō, Li Po, Nishiyama Sōin and Charles Bukowski.

Tracks 2-7 make up “This World of Dew Suite” which follows the emotional arc of poet Kobahashi Issa’s grief as he mourned the loss of his young daughter. What ties all these compositions together is how they explore themes of loneliness, perseverance and impermanence.

  • The Tiki Collective: ‘Muse’ CD Album Release!

The Berkeley Church 315 Queen St E, Toronto, ON, Canada

Muse is the debut album by The Tiki Collective: an all-star Toronto band featuring fifteen incredible guest vocalists.

The name Muse carries with it two meanings: Firstly as a noun, “to honour a person who is a source of artistic inspiration”, and secondly as a verb, because they “mused” over how to create a fresh new sound. The album is a blend of exotica, jazz, and pop music that will have you dreaming of beaches, palm trees, and wondrous sunsets. The melodies are timeless, while the production is modern and seamless.

The recording features new arrangements of popular songs including “Don’t Fear The Reaper” and “The Sweetest Taboo,” as well as exquisite classic rarities such as “All Too Soon” and “Chelsea Bridge.” Also featured are original compositions “Dreaming” and “The Wanderer”.

  • John Pittman – ‘Kinship’ CD Release!

Jazz Bistro 251 Victoria St., Toronto, ON, Canada

    John Pittman: trumpet
    Shirantha Beddage: baritone saxophone
    Jeff McLeod: piano
    Mike Downes: bass
    Curtis Nowosad: drums

It has been said that a musician should “tell a story” when they play and storytelling, at its core, is really all about relationships. How characters interact, how they grow or change, and how the audience relates to, responds to or empathizes with those characters is essential. It is the relationships that bring meaning: to the story, its characters, its audience, its author. That is why Kinship is at the heart of this album; it tells the story of the relationships and experiences that inform the artist and bring meaning to the music.

Kinship is the debut solo release from Toronto- based trumpet player John Pittman (The Heavyweights Brass Band, Composer’s Collective Big Band), and features a stellar cast of musicians that were chosen in keeping with the overarching narrative of this record. Shirantha Beddage, Jeff McLeod, Mike Downes and Curtis Nowosad all share a history and a connection with John and, while they are all musical giants individually, their collective studio chemistry is palpable on this release.

Kinship is the story of the people and experiences that make us who we are; that which brings meaning to our narrative and communicates what matters most to us. Here’s hoping you find kinship with the artists through your experience of the music.
