SUMMARY:Ernesto Cervini's Turboprop @ The Rex!
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating their upcoming release ‘A Canadian Songbook’ \n\n\n\nFeb 21\, 22\, 23 & 24 \n\n\n\nSets @ 8:30 & 10pm \n\n\n\nTara Davidson – Alto SaxophoneJoel Frahm – Tenor SaxophoneWilliam Carn – Trombone Adrean Farrugia – Piano Dan Loomis – Bass Ernesto Cervini – Drums  \n\n\n\nFollowing up his ambitious JUNO Award-nominated 2022 album Joy (“a compositional tour-de-force\, with strong melodies scored for diverse instrumentations” — Ted Panken\, DownBeat)\, Toronto drummer and composer Ernesto Cervini is proud to announce the release of A Canadian Songbook\, a vivid\, fiery\, insightful exploration of music composed by Canadians. This outing finds Cervini returning to the helm of his accomplished and long-running sextet Turboprop\, with a thick\, contrapuntal three-horn sound that’s been developing over the course of three previous albums: Abundance (2018)\, Rev (2017) and Turboprop (2015). Turboprop’s personnel also played an important role on Joy\, along with a cast of singers and members of Cervini’s other projects\, notably Tetrahedron and TuneTown.  \n\n\n\nOn A Canadian Songbook it’s Turboprop all the way\, soaring on a couple of impressive Cervini originals and arrangements of the pop/rock numbers “When I Fall” by The Barenaked Ladies and “Clumsy” by Toronto’s own Our Lady Peace. Brilliant tunes by Cervini’s contemporaries and friends\, Allison Au (“Aureole”)\, James Hill (“Skeletons”) and Turboprop trombonist William Carn (“The Inertia of Complacency”) round out the program. “The two pop songs on the record I’ve been listening to since they were released\, when I was a teenager\,” Cervini says. “Allison’s and James’ songs I fell in love with while working publicity for their albums\,” he adds\, alluding to his role as founding director of Orange Grove Publicity.  \n\n\n\nWith two saxes (Tara Davidson\, Joel Frahm) and Carn’s trombone offering harmonic richness\, limitless versatility and off-the-charts improvisational prowess\, Cervini can tell the story of what these songs inspire in him\, aided by the eloquent\, formidable rhythm section partners Dan Loomis (bass) and Adrean Farrugia (piano). “I’m happy to present my reflection on the Canadian music scene and the wonderful composers within it\,” writes Cervini in the liner notes. “I’ve always been very proud of my Canadian heritage. I love how supportive this country is of artists\, and I think that support is reflected in the success Canadian artists have on a global scale.”

SUMMARY:Andrea Superstein 'Oh Mother' Album Release Tour
DESCRIPTION:Feb 16: Deep Cove Coffee House – Deep Cove\, BC \n\n\n\nFeb 17: Jazz at the Bolt – Burnaby\, BC \n\n\n\nMarch 16: The Jazz Room – Waterloo\, ON \n\n\n\nMarch 21: The Tasting Lounge – Castleton\, ON \n\n\n\nMarch 22: Kindersley Arts Council – Kindersley\, SK \n\n\n\nMarch 23: The Two Twenty – Saskatoon\, SK \n\n\n\nApril 6: Vernon Jazz Club – Vernon\, BC \n\n\n\nMay 3: Upstairs – Montreal\, QC \n\n\n\nMay 4: Palais Montcalm – Quebec City\, QC \n\n\n\nMay 10: Frankie’s Jazz Club – Vancouver\, BC \n\n\n\nMay 12: Evergreen Cultural Centre – Coquitlam\, BC \n\n\n\nOh Mother was inspired by Vancouver vocalist and composer Andrea Superstein’s own experience as a mother. Between the trauma of birthing a baby and all of the physical changes a mother goes through\, coupled with balancing a job\, feeling out your new role and your place within the world: contrary to popular belief\, mothering can be a very isolating experience. \n\n\n\nThese dark times spurred a lot of questions that Superstein started asking. She wanted to know if the struggles she endured were universal: were they a sign of the times or just hers alone? Superstein interviewed close to 100 mothers to get at the root of motherhood. What were the common experiences\, and why were people so afraid or unable to speak their truth? \n\n\n\nBased on these conversations she wrote music: some songs are one person’s story\, others are of the collective consciousness. Some a stark look at loss\, others describe the heart-exploding feeling a parent can have towards their child. The album represents how all of these opposing feelings can coexist and shines a true light on the complicated\, delicate\, beautiful\, traumatic and messy journey that is motherhood. \n\n\n\nAs a singer “redefining jazz\,” Andrea is one of the most versatile voices in music today. Oh Mother is an ambitious tour de force highlighting her ever growing creativity and sensitivity as a songwriter and arranger.  Expect powerful vocals\, evoking the gentle and the strong\, lithely navigating the colours of the emotional spectrum.

SUMMARY:Disaster Pony Release Concert!
DESCRIPTION:Disaster Pony is a new jazz/EDM band led by Gordon Hyland\, a saxophonist\, multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Toronto. With a Masters in Jazz Performance under his belt from the University of Toronto\, Hyland has built up a reputation as an in-demand session player in Canada’s live music scene\, playing hundreds of shows with the popular cover band Dwayne Gretzky. It was while touring with this band that Hyland connected with his main Disaster Pony collaborators Adam Hindle (Born Ruffians) and Ian Docherty (July Talk.) After all of their shows were unceremoniously cancelled in 2020 (due to a global health crisis that shall not be named…) Hyland and Hindle decided they needed to follow through on an idea they had of making a danceable saxophone record. The album was recorded over two weeks in February and March of 2021. The sessions were meant to be experimental from the beginning. Their thesis was to learn and try to do anything and everything that came to mind\, then figure out how it all worked together after the fact. \n\n\n\nThe Disaster Pony ethos is anchored in the electronic music of artists such as Amon Tobin\, Bonobo and The Herbalist: artists known for combining hip-hip\, downtempo\, and jazz samples. Instead of sampling other artists\, Hindle\, Hyland\, and a roster of other musicians performed their own grooves and improvisations using tracks by the likes of Madlib\, MF Doom\, Beastie Boys\, and WuTang Clang as jumping off points. The recordings were then disassembled and reassembled\, resulting in a record that  is groove-focused\, tape drenched\, saxophone friendly\, and – above all – beautiful. \n\n\n\nThis record features several of Hyland’s closest musical friends. Andrew Roorda is heavily featured with his use of FX pedals\, bringing the bass into the sonic world of synthesizers. Vivienne Wilder adds her voice as a double bassist on the album providing everything from Amon Tobin-like double bass-grooves to soundscapes of layered bowing. Electronic artist Acote adds sound design to several tracks\, further hybridizing the album and bringing it into the world of experimental UK  electronic Jazz. The album also features special guest appearances by cellist Liza McLellan (Quartetto Gelato\, Devah) and violinist Eugene Draw (Dr. Draw).

SUMMARY:Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra with Jill Townsend and Christine Jensen – Tidal Currents: East Meets West Album Release!
DESCRIPTION:The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra (WJO) is Canada’s first community-based\, non-profit professional jazz orchestra. Founded in 1997 (registered as a charity in 2000)\, the WJO has matured to become an important part of Winnipeg’s cultural landscape\, reflected in the ongoing support the organization receives from the Manitoba Arts Council\, the Winnipeg Arts Council\, the Winnipeg Foundation\, and other sponsors.  \n\n\n\nTidal Currents: East Meets West – The WJO’s seventh release – features a commission between two of Canada’s most compelling writers for big band jazz: Jill Townsend and Christine Jensen. The music born of this meeting reflects on the places that meant the most to them\, especially the bodies of water that surrounded them both in their youth up until the present. Townsend captures images and sounds of her east coast upbringing\, unfolding into Jensen’s west coast childhood memories.  \n\n\n\nThe music moves into the waters surrounding them at present\, including Townsend’s now west coast land and waterscape and Jensen’s explorations of her Montreal environs on the powerful St-Lawrence seaway. They have blended their compositions into one suite with the WJO: Tidal Currents\, an East meets West Collaboration. Both composers are featured as guest artists\, with Jill Townsend as conductor and Christine Jensen as soprano saxophone soloist.  \n\n\n\nPresented by Jazz Winnipeg

SUMMARY:Mike Downes Quartet @ Jazz Bistro!
DESCRIPTION:Mike Downes: bassRobi Botos: keyboardsTed Quinlan: guitarsJoaquin Nunez: percussion (Jan. 26)Davide Di Renzo: percussion (Jan. 27) \n\n\n\nTwo nights! Jan 26 & 27 @ 8pm! \n\n\n\nNoted as a profoundly musical bassist with a keen melodic sense\, Toronto-based composer\, arranger and bassist Mike Downes has released a number of award-winning recordings for a variety of instrumentations: from solo bass to trio\, and from quartet to 11-piece ensemble. Guitar great Pat Metheny has called Downes “one of my favorite bass players.” With The Way In\, Downes presents his first recording for piano\, guitar and bass trio featuring his longtime musical collaborators Robi Botos and Ted Quinlan\, alongside Joaquin Nunez Hidalgo and Davide Di Renzo – two extraordinary guest percussionists who appear on five pieces.  \n\n\n\nThe Way In showcases the immense musicality of the core trio. “We have a deep\, deep connection from years of playing together. I wanted to approach this album from a chamber music perspective while showcasing the improvisational brilliance of each musician” notes Downes. “I’ve been writing a lot of arrangements for large ensemble lately\, including symphony orchestra\, and I thought it would be intriguing to distill those compositional techniques and orchestration aesthetics to a drummer-less trio setting\, where all of the nuances are front and centre and the music breathes in a different way.” Quinlan and Botos appeared on both of Downes’ JUNO award-winning albums\, Ripple Effect (2013) and Root Structure (2017). \n\n\n\nThe jazz tradition boasts a rich history of drummer-less trios: the early Ahmad Jamal Trio (including Chamber Music of the New Jazz); the Oscar Peterson Trio with Ray Brown and Herb Ellis; the Nat King Cole trio; the Roy Hargrove/Christian McBride/Stephen Scott Trio; all these and more served as inspiration during the creation of The Way In. \n\n\n\nA prominent fixture on the Canadian and international jazz scenes for years\, Downes has long been praised for his limitless versatility\, seemingly effortless technique\, and his extensive knowledge of not only the bass\, but of the foundations of music in general. “I’m incredibly proud of where I’ve landed as a composer and of the profound musical connections that are evident in this album\,” states Downes. “I feel it’s my best work to date.”

SUMMARY:Jesse Dietschi Trio 'Gradient' Album Release!
DESCRIPTION:Ewen Farncombe: pianoJesse Dietschi: bassEthan Ardelli: drums \n\n\n\nGradient: a change in the magnitude of a property observed in passing from one moment to another. The term implies gradual transition on a continuous scale between two seemingly opposing elements. In Gradient\, the Jesse Dietschi Trio travel along a continuum between modern jazz and contemporary classical chamber music\, adjusting position as they navigate compositions that blend these styles. The progression of the album invites the listener on a journey from modern jazz soundscapes to chamber music aesthetics and back again. \n\n\n\nLeader\, bassist\, and composer Jesse Dietschi is an international touring and recording jazz artist who also serves as a top-call extra musician with both the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Canadian Opera Company. Joined by pianist Ewen Farncombe and drummer Ethan Ardelli\, the compositions featured in Gradient draw from Dietschi’s extensive training in both the jazz and orchestral fields to create lush and colorful auditory narratives exploring a wide range of emotional responses.  \n\n\n\nFrom joyful to melancholy\, exciting to introspective\, optimistic to angsty\, Gradient uses both composition and improvisation to take listeners on a journey through the full gamut of human experiences. \n\n\n\njessedietschi.com

SUMMARY:Solidaridad 'Distancia' Vinyl Album Release!
DESCRIPTION:Tango is the poetry of a city: the the music of passionate fate. DISTANCIA by Solidaridad Tango takes you on a journey from the despair of the pandemic to a celebration of the love and hope that kept us going through our darkest hours. “Distancia” is the Spanish word for “distance”—-this album captures the way people reach across boundaries of place and space\, bridging the vast distances from Toronto to Buenos Aires to Kandy in Sri Lanka through music and poetry.  \n\n\n\nThe album is an emotional roller coaster – a searing portrait of our times and a riotous answer to the divisions that keep us apart. The English lyrics and poetry by Aparna Halpé are unique in the world of tango\, where songs are written almost exclusively in Spanish. They capture issues of homelessness\, anti-Indigenous racism and discrimination\, and the universal experiences of love and loss that haunt us all. Halpé’s compositions are a unique synthesis of multicultural musical influences\, while being situated clearly within the language of tango. \n\n\n\nThe album celebrates emerging women tango composers such as Pétalo Selser and Eva Wolff\, while also tipping its hat to the iconoclast of contemporary tango\, Julián Peralta. DISTANCIA ends with a poetic land acknowledgement\, signaling the band’s commitment to reconciliation practices\, an approach further demonstrated in the powerful album art by Oneida visual artist Mo Thunder. \n\n\n\nDISTANCIA rocks out with tango\, rock\, candombe\, murga\, milonga\, and vannam rhythms and melodies\, embodying the diversity of this band of women who are changing the face and sound of tango. Described as “bringing tango forward” by Laura Fernandez\, host of Jazz FM 91’s Café Latino\, this album by Canada’s all-woman tango band is a passionate embrace of life and death\, and of the kind of inspiration that arrives at 3AM in the morning\, wherever you are in the world. \n\n\n\nsolidaridadtango.ca

SUMMARY:Peripheral Vision 'We've Got Nothing' Album Release!
DESCRIPTION:Trevor Hogg – Tenor SaxophoneDon Scott – GuitarMichael Herring – BassNick Fraser – Drums \n\n\n\nPeripheral Vision is one of the most exciting and innovative jazz quartets on the international jazz scene. Based in Toronto\, Canada\, the group is co-lead by long-time musical collaborators guitarist Don Scott and bassist Michael Herring. They have assembled a synergistic musical unit designed to push the boundaries of jazz while engaging the listener with a grooving\, toe-tapping immediacy. Their distinctive musical voice bridges tradition and innovation\, with deeply felt influences ranging from jazz\, rock\, classical\, and improv\, with a focus on dynamic group interaction. \n\n\n\nWe’ve Got Nothing is Peripheral Vision’s 2nd live album\, and 6th full length release. It is a thrilling celebration of the band’s 15 years together\, and marks the first time in their long creative history that Scott and Herring have co-written music together. The project was conceived during the pandemic as a way to create collaboratively; thankfully\, pandemic restrictions were lifted in time for them to work together in person. They were eventually able to debut their new music at the return of their long-running monthly series at The Tranzac\, one of Toronto’s most important creative music hubs. The concert series was recorded over the course of four months between January to April 2023 by Peripheral Vision’s long-time co-producer/mad scientist Jean Martin (Barnyard Records). The album is a collection of the band’s finest performances from the series\, with each piece accompanied by live video filmed and edited by Good Job Hi Five (the creative team of Brittany Farhat & Matt Fong). \n\n\n\nOnce again\, Peripheral Vision has mined the intricacies of their collective neuroses for inspiration. We’ve Got Nothing is about the constantly pressing search for new sources of creativity – especially on the heels of the disruption of the pandemic. Scott and Herring drew on a range of influences for the record: Comedian Stewart Lee’s musings on lost creativity and his deft (and hilarious) incorporation of his anxiety into his routine; the influential bassist Dave Holland’s thoughts on achieving balance in life; and most importantly\, the band’s 15 year history of playing and traveling together. The original working title for this project was Telling Tales Out Of School\, a phrase they often use in their “Comedy Vehicle” (aka their tour van) while encouraging a policy of “Full Disclosure\,” which may\, on occasion\, require invoking the “Cone Of Silence.” \n\n\n\n2 sets starting at 9:30pm! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nperipheralvisionmusic.com

SUMMARY:Alyssa Giammaria 'In Time' Album Release Shows!
DESCRIPTION:Alyssa Giammaria: voiceSteven Noronha: pianoJosh Sparks: guitarPT Sandberg: bassAidan McConnell: drums \n\n\n\nIn Time is Toronto vocalist and composer Alyssa Giammaria’s first full length album of original music. Half of these pieces (Conversations\, Dream Life\, For Now) were written in 2016\, when Giammaria was first beginning to seriously explore her interest in writing music\, while the other half were written in the months leading up to the  album’s summer 2022 recording session (The Only Part\, In Time\, What Are the Words\, Mend). The end result is a potent mix of old and new: a lively sonic blend of fresh\, energetic songs alongside a selection of more thoughtful and patient pieces. In Time is a beautiful portrait of an up and coming young artist’s creative process in action.  \n\n\n\nRecorded live off the floor at Toronto’s storied Canterbury Music Company in August 2022\, In Time features Giammaria’s quintet\, with additional accompaniment from vocalists Aoife Louise-Doyle and Stephanie Sloss on three pieces. The band is also a contrast of old and new for Giammaria: she has been singing with Louise-Doyle and Sloss for ten years\, while her band is a more recent creation\, assembled while they were studying together at The University of Toronto. The band does so much more than simply accompany Giammaria’s singing – they deftly interact with the melodic shapes and harmonic moods of the songs as much as they interact with each other.  \n\n\n\nWhile Giammaria has gone through different stages throughout her compositional process\, there is a consistent thread that runs through the album: each piece was written  first and foremost to draw out the meaning behind the lyrics. The band effectively uses each song’s rich compositional material as a launching pad for their improvisations\, with each member leaving their own distinct creative mark. The vocal melodies on In Time vary from airy and agile to bright and powerful\, and are all delivered most memorably by one of the most exciting young singers on the Canadian jazz scene.  \n\n\n\nFour nights: Oct. 4\, 5\, 6\, & 7Sets at 8:30 & 10pm \n\n\n\nalyssagiammaria.com

SUMMARY:James McGowan 'Reaching In' CD Release!
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Carleton Music masterclass series \n\n\n\nJames McGowan: piano\, keys\, compositionsJamaal Amir Akbari: spoken wordCendrine Despax & Jean Despax: violinMaxime Despax & Olivier Philippe-Auguste: violaValérie Despax & Cal McGowan: celloEd Lister: trumpetPetr Cancura & Mike Tremblay: tenor saxophoneMark Ferguson: tromboneAlex Moxon: guitarJean-Philippe Lapensée: bassJamie Holmes: drums \n\n\n\nReaching In is the first half of an extended story told through music\, spoken-word program notes and visual art. It depicts a protagonist’s journey from struggles of isolation\, low self-worth\, social anxiety\, addiction and loss\, to finding peace\, acceptance\, belonging\, and a sense of community. This multi-movement suite by composer and pianist James McGowan is created and performed in a fusion of classical and jazz styles\, with other influences of free improvisation\, hip hop and latin styles. Combining the Modasaurus jazz-fusion quartet with Despax string quartet at its core\, several tunes also feature an enhanced ensemble with Petr Cancura and Mike Tremblay on tenor sax\, Ed Lister on trumpet\, and Mark Ferguson on trombone.  \n\n\n\nUsing powerful musical expression\, tonal interconnections\, recurring themes and several pervasive musical motifs\, the 16-movement concept album conveys deep feelings and extra-musical meaning. Guided by the composer’s poetry\, the omnipresent instrumental musical motifs acquire intentional signification as the pieces unfold. Like a soundtrack to an imaginary film\, the music itself is a narrative voice. It invites the listening audience to experience the emotional richness of life even more fully through one’s own imagination and personal reflection. The CD cover/digital album art depicting An Nguyen’s painting of Reaching In\,also contributes a visual dimension that adds meaningful metaphors to the overarching narrative. The poetry\, art and music take us through a story of overcoming personal challenges to offer an uncertain\, yet hopeful future. The album seeks to engage the listener with their mind\, heart and soul.    \n\n\n\nThe continuation of this musical journey—and second half of the story—will be presented in the next album\, Reaching Out to be released by the James McGowan Ensemble in 2024.

SUMMARY:The Nimmons Tribute - Volume 2: Generational CD Release!
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Turcotte – Trumpet\, FlugelhornTara Davidson – Alto & Soprano Sax\, ClarinetMike Murley – Tenor SaxAlex Dean – Bari Sax\, Bass ClarinetWilliam Carn – TromboneSean Nimmons – Piano\, Fender Rhodes\, ArrangementsJon Maharaj – BassEthan Ardelli – Drums \n\n\n\nGenerational by The Nimmons Tribute is the second volume of a tribute project honouring the legacy of Canadian jazz legend Phil Nimmons (O.C.\, O. Ont.)\, who celebrates his 100th birthday in 2023. This album brings new life to vintage Nimmons compositions with brand new arrangements by Phil’s grandson\, pianist\, arranger and composer Sean Nimmons\, who also contributes two beautiful new compositions of his own. \n\n\n\nGenerational features some of the finest musicians in Canada\, including many JUNO Award winners. The Nimmons Tribute\, led by Sean\, is a group of Phil’s colleagues\, former students\, friends and family who have come together in a joyous celebration of Phil and his music.  \n\n\n\nPhil Nimmons is a huge part of Canada’s cultural legacy. He is one of Canada’s pioneering composers\, and one of a handful of musicians who helped solidly establish the country’s status in the jazz world. Phil also helped launch several major initiatives that continue to support Canadian contemporary music today. \n\n\n\nVolume 2 – Generational builds on the band’s first album\, while showing more of the range and diversity in Phil’s writing. This album is a more personal undertaking for Sean Nimmons. Generational is inspired by the interconnectedness of our collective human family tree. In music and life itself\, we hear the echoing voices of those who have come before us.  By contributing our own voices to this dialogue\, we join in an ongoing conversation that is united through our shared humanity\, and further enriched by the unique quality of each new voice that joins in. Through careful listening and our own honest expression\, we can honour our intergenerational similarities and differences\, participating in the ever-evolving conversation of life.

SUMMARY:Mira Choquette 'In Reel Time' CD Release - Toronto!
DESCRIPTION:“You had to be there\,” the saying goes. But in the case ofIn Reel Time\, the new album by Montreal vocalist Mira Choquette\, you’ll feel like you were at the recording session even though you weren’t. The album has the intimate feeling of something happening in your living room. Or\, more accurately\, in someone else’s living room… because that’s where it was recorded.  \n\n\n\n“We did everything live at my house in Toronto\,” said bassist and producer Joshua Goldman. “All the musicians were in the same room\, including Mira. The engineer\, Timothy Doyle\, was one room over.” Choquette said the entire session was spontaneous\, noting that most of the songs on the album are first or second takes\, recorded during three of the hottest days of the summer of 2022. That led to an interesting situation on the final day of recording… \n\n\n\n“We did two days of everybody playing live\,” said Goldman. “And then we decided to do some vocal overdubs\, too. That day was even hotter\, so Mira ended up doing all of her overdubs naked in the hallway.” Said Choquette: “I had to do [Stevie Wonder’s] Overjoyed\, and there ain’t no way I can do Overjoyed with sweat beading down my back.” \n\n\n\nLiteral nakedness aside\, the album also features real moments of emotional exposure. ”For me\, half this album is a break-up album\,” Choquette said. “We were recording a block away from what had been our house\, my partner’s and mine. Ne me quitte pas was really hard to do\, as I had also lost my father not long before the recording. So half the album is about loss and half the album is songs of joy and love. It was very real: the heat wave\, the heartbreak\, being a block away\, just being in a weird place.” \n\n\n\nThe joy shines through on songs like Harry Belafonte’s Jump In The Line and a burning version of Cole Porter’s Just One Of Those Things\, which features Farncombe’s piano to great effect\, along with some first-class vocal improvisation from Choquette. There’s also an original called Love Crime\, co-written by Choquette and Goldman\, that recalls the slow-dragging swing of the Basie band.  \n\n\n\nAll in all\, it’s an album that takes you on a ride\, like the best records do. In Reel Time is proof that you don’t always have to be there. Sometimes\, if you’re very lucky\, “there” comes to you. \n\n\n\nmirachoquette.bandcamp.com

SUMMARY:Dhaivat Jani PLUS: Sum // Parts CD Release!
DESCRIPTION:Dhaivat Jani PLUS is the brainchild of Toronto based composer\, drummer and tabla player Dhaivat Jani. Originally hailing from Ahmedabad\, India – the city of love\, fun\, food and heat – Dhaivat Jani and his group serve up original contemporary jazz music with a healthy dose of Indian classical music\, rock and fluid improvisation. \n\n\n\nSum // Parts represents the tally of Jani’s life so far\, starting with his life growing up in India\, to his migration to Canada\, and everything in between: the struggles\, the hustle\, the joy\, the tears\, the fights\, the victories\, the ups\, the downs\, the spirit\, and the smiles. \n\n\n\nDrawing inspiration from a diverse range of artists including Chris Potter\, Brad Mehldau\, Led Zeppelin\, Trilok Gurtu\, Radiohead\, Brian Blade\, and Tigran Hamasyan\, Jani and his group emphasize storytelling and narrative in their performances\, taking the audience on a deep musical journey. Day 21 and Peshkaar are driven by their distinctive North Indian rhythms; Unchain and It Might Rain fill the listener’s taste for rock without losing any of their improvisational edge; Kaleidoscope offers a novel listening experience with its polyrhythmic arrangement inspired by African rhythms. \n\n\n\nSum // Parts is a beautiful and compelling musical statement from one of the most exciting young voices on the Toronto scene.

SUMMARY:Projet Seb Parent Album Release!
DESCRIPTION:Projet Seb Parent is the eponymous debut album from 24-year-old Montreal drummer Sébastien Parent. While it was written with the rich tradition of big band music in mind\, this music contains an eclectic range of stylistic influences from the genres that Parent grew up listening to\, including rock\, classical\, neo-soul\, country\, trap and bossa nova. Each piece on the album represents a unique period in Parent’s young life. \n\n\n\nThe album was recorded entirely during the depths of the Covid pandemic\, between the summer of 2021 and winter of 2022. However\, this was not a conventional studio recording: each of the 18 musicians recorded their parts separately\, at home in isolation. For some artists\, this process would seem impossible due to the lack of realtime communication\, but Parent relished the challenge. \n\n\n\nParent never intended for the album to be a showcase for his own playing first and foremost. This record is a celebration of 18 unique creative voices assembled together during a trying time. It doesn’t matter that the musicians recorded their parts separately: in fact\, that distance only serves to reinforce the power that music has to unite people. \n\n\n\nprojetsebparent.bandcamp.com
