DESCRIPTION:Sahara von Hattenberger – CelloJoanne Kang – PianoAdrian Vedady – BassJim Doxas – Drums \n\n\n\nFans of Japanese literature may recognize the title of Montreal cellist Sahara von Hattenberger’s new album as having been borrowed from acclaimed author Haruki Murakami’s most famous fantasy novel\, 1Q84. The story begins in 1984 and follows a young woman named Aomame as she travels to a parallel universe – one almost identical to our own\, except for a few eerie differences. She calls this parallel reality 1Q84 (‘Q’ is pronounced Kyuu\, the same way that the number 9 is pronounced in Japanese.) \n\n\n\nThe year 1984 also sees the completion of composer Claude Bolling’s Suite for Cello and Jazz Piano Trio – and whether it was his intention or not\, this new music acted as an antidote for the angst of the era. Massive inflation\, the AIDS epidemic\, financial unrest\, an overwhelming fear and obsession with technology – these all loomed large in the zeitgeist. Von Hattenberger’s bold re-imagining of this famous crossover suite maintains the same sense of overwhelming joy and wit as the original. The Bolling Suite – over an hour in length\, in 6 movements— is what comprises the first CD of this ambitious double album. \n\n\n\nThe second disc represents the 1Q84 of this project. Composed in the ‘alternate reality ‘of 2024\, where we’re experiencing an entirely different pandemic\, inflation is as high as it was 40 years ago\, and the threat of AI is suddenly omnipresent. (It shouldn’t be surprising that mullets have come back into fashion…) 2024 feels a lot like 1984 – reminding us of Aomame’s parallel reality in Murakami’s tale. In that spirit\, the record’s second disc is a beautiful collection of newly commissioned pieces that pay homage to the original Bolling suite. Both halves of this record will evoke pure joy for everyone who listens. This album is a welcome respite from the  pressing darkness we often find ourselves in today.

DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the release of Calgaréal’s first LP “Vanishing Points”! \n\n\n\nThe event will feature a listening of the whole album\, and social mingling with the Calgary based musicians of the group. Bring a yoga mat if you would like to listen lying down! \n\n\n\nCalgaréal is a collective of eight musicians from Montréal and Calgary. Coming from different horizons\, these artists find a common interest in traditional music and improvisation. Their original music presents their conversations in music; conversations between two cities often pictured as wildly different\, conversations between different musical traditions. Playing with elements of traditional music from China\, Quebec\, and different parts of Europe\, they present an assorted original program bouncing between various traditions and experimentation\, with brand new compositions and arrangements. \n\n\n\nAfter launching the collective with shows in Calgary in Montreal in 2022\, they have released a live EP and are releasing a studio LP in the Fall of 2024. \n\n\n\nFrom Calgary: FOONYAP (vocal\, violin)\, Jeremy Gignoux (violin\, viola)\, Jiajia Li (flutes\, dizi)\, and Robin Tufts (percussion\, drums).  \n\n\n\nFrom Montréal: Aurélien Tomasi (clarinet\, saxophones)\, Hugo Blouin (double bass)\, Mathieu Langlois (guitarra flamenca\, saxophones)\, and Sébastien Leblanc (guitars\, cobza\, caval\, tilinca).

On October 4th\, 2024\, the groupreleases their debut album Peaks and Valleys on Modica Music. Peaks and Valleys features songs from Williams\, Allen\, and a brand-new five-song suite\, Peaks and Valleys\, written by Parker.  \n\n\n\nCaptured at Toronto’s incredible Revolution Recording studio\, Peaks and Valleys was recorded after a residency at Toronto’s Rex Hotel\, and has all of the energy and nuanced interplay one would expect from some of Canada’s best musicians. Parker – who plays piano and\, on one track\, recites spoken word poetry – is joined by Allison Au on alto saxophone\, Alison Young on alto saxophone and voice\, Rebecca Hennessy on trumpet and voice\, Lauren Falls on upright and electric bass\, Mackenzie Longpre on drums\, and percussionist Mario Allende. Peaks and Valleys is produced by Parker and leading Canadian bassist Dan Fortin\, and is made possible through grants from both the Toronto Arts Council and the Ontario Arts Council. \n\n\n\nAn active member of the Canadian music scene\, Parker has played in the Alex Dean Quartet\, the Parker Abbot Trio\, the John Pittman Quartet\, the Parker-Wilson Duo\, and the Radiohead tribute band Idioteque. In 2021\, Parker completed an MA in Composition at York University\, where she studied with Randolph Peters\, Stephanie Martin\, and Noam Lemish. Parker has also studied independently with world-renowned artists in New York and Europe\, including Sophia Rosoff\, Aaron Goldberg\, Guillermo Klein\, Fred Hersch\, and Enrico Pieranunzi. \n\n\n\nWhether performing Parker’s originals or songs from Allen and Williams\, the group has a playful\, soulful sound all its own\, a deep chemistry that has developed over years of performances\, rehearsals\, and recordings. As an album\, Peaks and Valleys pays tribute to Allen and Williams not just by playing their songs\, but – most importantly – by continuing their legacy of musical excellence\, artistic innovation\, and shared joy.

Saphir navigates the deep oceans of time\, in a journey of self-exploration that is both personal and universal. In these compositions she harmonizes the tangible and the imagined\, as the dream\, the nightmare and the awakened reality all resonate. \n\n\n\nThe album opens with Ancestral Shadows\, inviting us to embrace the shadows we carry throughout our lives\, followed by the lyrical question: “Where Do Dreams Go?”— dreams being the safe space to escape the grief and sorrows of waking life. Saphir\, the daughter of Holocaust survivors\, gives voice to her shadows and dreams with grace\, humour and sensuality. The album closes with the title track\, Accolades of Time\, asking “Could we step onto a stage / Into the spotlight\, into the limelight / Through the Accolades of Time?” In this album\, Saphir does just that\, putting her heart vulnerably in the spotlight\, inviting us to hear our own stories within hers.  \n\n\n\nWhen Saphir writes “If you really want the rhythm\, find it in your body\,” she knows what she is talking about. For over 25 years\, she’s has been a music therapist and sound healer\, working with adults and youths to address their physical\, emotional and spiritual challenges. This extensive experience informs her holistic approach to music. “Composing and improvising sustain and nurture my creative soul” she says. Her voice adds a heart-felt\, full bodied dimension to every song and her flute solos are like the fluttering of a bird’s wing\, soaring high.

It features ten tracks composed and arranged by bandleader and trumpet player Marie Goudy\,  and showcases the sensational voice of lead singer Jocelyn Barth. The music traverses a wide range of jazz sub-genres\, from Latin to soul to swing\, but the common thread is a strong foundation of catchy melodies and rich grooves. The album delves into themes of love\, passion\, and triumph. Even the songs that address themes of loneliness and heartbreak  are infused with positive energy as Goudy finds the beauty in the pain. \n\n\n\nGoudy’s main compositional influences are Stevie Wonder\, Maria Schneider\, and Kenny Wheeler. She approaches writing music as though she were writing a novel: establishing a harmonic and melodic ‘setting’ that the listener can immerse themselves in\, and using unexpected harmonic shifts as ‘plot twists’ that delight the ear\, ultimately culminating in a narrative climax. \n\n\n\nMarie Goudy’s fiery trumpet solos are a standout feature of the album\, adding an energetic spark and dynamic range to each piece. Paloma Skyconsists of vocalist Jocelyn Barth\, trumpet player Marie Goudy\, pianist Stu Harrison\, bassist Nick Arseneau\, and drummer Andrew Scott. Four out of the five musicians are accomplished vocalists\, and Hold On to Me makes full use of their skills with lush\, four-part vocal harmonies throughout the album. The record is produced by six-time JUNO nominee Elizabeth Shepherd\, whose contribution imparts a pop sensibility to an album that remains firmly rooted in its jazz foundations. \n\n\n\nPaloma Sky’s music is enjoyed by a broad range of audiences. Even listeners who usually shy away from jazz find themselves enthralled with the band’s sound. This album has something for everyone\, whether they’re a die-hard jazz fan or completely new to the genre.

His debut album Letting Go of a Dream was initially conceived as a platform to honor his greatest musical influences: Bill Evans\, Charlie Haden\, and Kenny Garrett. Early on in the writing process though\, a more complete vision for the album began to emerge. “As I began writing this music\, I realized that I wanted to convey the story of my own journey of self-discovery in the midst of our overwhelmingly digitized society.”  \n\n\n\nEach piece on the album represents a step forward on the journey towards self-acceptance. What Could Have Been – inspired by the Bill Evans composition Time Remembered – conveys a sense of vulnerability with its broken time feel and unexpected  harmonic cadences. Acceptance of the Journey is the most involved composition on the album\, featuring several stylistic changes throughout the piece. This song is about dealing with the sudden changes life sometimes throws your way when you least expect it. “I like to think about how we go about living our lives with everything going according to plan and then – bam – all of a sudden something or someone comes into our life and changes its trajectory in a single moment.” Noble wrote Farewell to the Kid from Spring with an intimate bass and piano duo in mind. “This piece is about longing for simpler times in the Arkansas wilderness\, away from my current noisy city life.” Throughout the tune the chemistry between Noble and Collins is apparent\, as they conjure a dream-like state together. \n\n\n\nLetting Go of a Dream represents the next stage of Noble’s search for authenticity as both a bassist and composer. Itis an exciting musical statement by a fine up and coming New Orleans musician.

In 2019\, he began assembling a quintet of his own to develop and perform his original music. He started with his oldest musical colleague\, fellow Peterborough\, Ontario born musician Aaron Blewett on drums. He then added Zimbabwean guitarist Matt Greenwood\, Toronto-based trumpeter Christian Antonacci\, and acclaimed Canadian pianist and two-time JUNO award winner Brian Dickinson. It is with this band that Christopher recorded his debut album Everything You Could Be\, adynamic  recording that chronicles his journey to Toronto to pursue his art. \n\n\n\nEverything You Could Be finds Parnis and his bandmates playing memorable compositions that move fluidly from cutting-edge modern jazz\, to heartbreaking ballads\, to free improvisation and back again. Augmented by subtle overdubbing\, the band explores soundscapes that are fully acoustic as well as ones far more surreal\, all while maintaining a close connection to their strong Canadian jazz roots. \n\n\n\nInfluences on the album vary broadly. Some will come as no surprise to the listener\, such as the work of Canadian composer and musical innovator Kenny Wheeler. Others are far more eclectic\, including the  mission of the mars rover and the work of horror novelist Clive Barker. These influences\, when combined with Parnis’ commitment to melody above all else\, create a record that Canadian jazz legend Don Thompson describes as “hauntingly beautiful.”

Neither has any idea what they’re about to experience\, but the excitement in the room speaks volumes: they’re in for something special. “All I recall is the sheer force of the trumpet and the incredible speed and energy that the band performed with\,”recalls Jim. The band was trumpet legend Woody Shaw’s quintet: a group that would forever imprint itself on the Brenan Brothers.
