SUMMARY:LOCAL TALENT - 'Higienópolis' Album Release!
DESCRIPTION:James Hill  – Piano and Keyboards\nRich Brown – Electric Bass\nIan Wright – Drums \nLOCAL TALENT combines 3 of Canada’s most eminent instrumentalists performing together on record for the first time. The group is lead by composer and keyboardist James Hill\, a rising star of the Toronto scene\, known best for his work with international  jazz and hip hop sensations BADBADNOTGOOD and Autobahn Trio. Accompanying him are electric bassist Rich Brown (Rinse The Algorithm\, Dapp Theory\, Steve Lehman\, Rudresh Mahanthappa) and drummer Ian Wright (one of Hill’s Autobahn Trio bandmates\, and one of his earliest collaborators.) \nThe concept for this project came to Hill while he was travelling in Brazil: the majority of the works were composed during a stay in the Higienópolis neighbourhood of São Paulo. Moved by the world’s ongoing issues of economic disparity\, and completely enthralled with Brazil’s abundance of artistic and musical talent\, Hill was inspired to explore new musical directions. Higienópolis’ musical themes present a tableau of stark contrasts\, ranging from dark\, melancholic motifs to bright\, yet eerily apprehensive anthems. \nThis album is a debut of sorts for Hill: it’s his first full-length release as a group’s sole composer and director. Aesthetically\, Hill’s ensemble is grounded in the improvisational realm of jazz music\, though sonically\, their reach is expansive\, with elements that bring to mind ambient music\, Classical\, Brazilian pop\, and fusion. The tongue in cheek name LOCAL TALENT serves as a reminder to audiences that wherever you are in the world\, the odds are you’re surrounded by a wealth of artistic ability. With this album\, Hill shines a light on the rich local talents of his adopted home town of  Toronto\, Canada.

SUMMARY:Shuffle Demons "Crazy Time" CD Release!
DESCRIPTION:Doors: 6:30pm \n2 sets starting at 8pm \nToronto’s iconic musical magicians the Shuffle Demons are excited to release their 9th album\, Crazy Time. Their first studio album in 6 years\, Crazy Time features 10 new original Shuffle Demons songs\, 7 instrumental and 3 vocal that run the stylistic gamut\, from hard driving instrumental modern jazz\, to vocal driven funk rap\, to blues. \nThe record introduces virtuosic newcomer Matt Lagan on tenor sax and bass legend Mike Downes to the Shuffle Demons universe\, alongside veteran demons Kelly Jefferson\, Stich Wynston\, and Richard Underhill. In celebration of the band’s 35th anniversary\, original band members Mike Murley and Jim Vivian are welcomed back in to the fold to work their magic on 5 of the album’s 10 tracks. This is a dynamic new recording that features in-from-the-outside writing\, virtuosic playing\, and that classic 3 horns and rhythm Shuffle Demons sound. \nOne of Canada’s hardest touring bands\, the Shuffle Demons recorded Crazy Time between tours of Central America\, New Zealand and Australia\, and the Canadian jazz festival circuit. Long time Shuffle Demons listeners will find modern jazz instrumentals alongside the classic Bop/Rap vocal tunes that have comprised the band’s repertoire for 35 years. Nine of the 10 songs were written by Juno award winner Richard Underhill and one by Kelly Jefferson. The album was recorded by iconic engineer Jeremy Darby at Canterbury Music and produced\, mixed and mastered by Jono Grant at Victory Drive Music. \nwww.shuffledemons.com

SUMMARY:Mark Godfrey - "Square Peg" CD Release Tour!
DESCRIPTION:Feb 22: Studio 242 Recital Hall\, University of Western Ontario\, London\, Ontario\nFeb 26: The Rex Hotel\, Toronto\, Ontario\nFeb 27: The Rex Hotel\, Toronto\, Ontario\nFeb 28: The Upstairs Jazz Club\, Montreal\, Quebec\nFeb 29: The National Arts Center\, Fourth Stage\, Ottawa\, Ontario\nMar 6: The Jazz Room\, Waterloo\, Ontario \nAllison Au: alto saxophone\nMatt Woroshyl: tenor saxophone\nChris Pruden: piano\nMark Godfrey: bass\nNick Fraser: drums \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThe minivan: a timeless icon that evokes memories ranging from little-league baseball games to nation-wide music tours. Square Peg is bassist and composer Mark Godfrey’s first full-length album\, and it hits harder than the sliding door on your family caravan. \nNamed the 2019 Emerging Jazz Artist by the Toronto Arts Foundation\, Mark has firmly secured himself in the fabric of the jazz idiom in Canada. Square Peg is Mark’s second release as a leader and features nine original compositions for jazz quintet and one original piece for solo bass. Joining Mark on this album are four of his longtime collaborators: saxophonists Allison Au and Matt Woroshyl\, pianist Chris Pruden\, and  drummer Nick Fraser. \nSquare Peg is a collection of compositions that span four years of Mark’s life during which he found himself living in Toronto and New York. Naturally\, the most efficient form of travel between these two cities with a double bass was his 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan\, Jean Claude Van Tan. The reflection that occurred during these drives sparked creativity and ideas for Mark that ultimately resulted in this album. The music on Square Peg connects Mark to his family and friends\, both cities\, and the deep tradition of jazz performance that informs and inspires his voice as an artist. \nFrom the ethereal and ambient opening of Black Stars to the raw\, acoustic solo performance of Bucket List\, Square Peg takes the listener on a joyride that is both turbulent and relaxing and thoroughly engaging from start to finish. Buckle up. \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Mark Segger Sextet: 'Lift Off' Album Release Celebration!
DESCRIPTION:The weightless feeling of release when an airplane’s wheels leave the pavement; the moment in a concert when time suddenly slows to a halt\, transporting the listener to another dimension; an out of body experience that leaves a performer feeling as though they’re in the audience\, watching themselves improvise on stage. These experiences – simultaneously otherworldly and familiar – helped inspire Lift Off\, the second recording by the Mark Segger Sextet. \nFounded in 2008\, Segger’s group features a top shelf selection of Toronto’s most accomplished improvisors. The project has been a common thread in the output of bandleader Mark Segger\, who is currently based out of Edmonton where he is a doctoral Killam Scholar in composition at the University of Alberta. Segger has performed in jazz rooted scenarios with the likes of Allison Au\, Lina Allemano\, Jane Bunnett\, Dave Burrell\, Steve Swell\, and Nate Wooley\, among many others. \nMuch of this music was written in the two weeks leading up to the recording session\, after a tour playing improvised music in Europe. Segger’s music reflects a wide range of creative interests\, from the swing of Mel Lewis and his jazz orchestra to the revolutionary string quartet writing of the composers Bartok and Ligeti (heard clearly on For the Bees.) Bees also nods to the “insect music” of the 1960’s British Free Improvisation scene. An affinity for Berlin’s Echtzeitmusik tradition is apparent on the piece One Note. \nLift Off is a giant leap forward for Segger’s group\, and is sure to become a touchstone recording in Canada’s jazz and creative music history. \nwww.marksegger.com

SUMMARY:Eric St. Laurent - 'Bliss Station' CD Release!
DESCRIPTION:The philosopher Joseph Campbell wrote extensively about “following one’s bliss.” These influential writings form the conceptual basis for Bliss Station\, the 13th album of original music by Toronto-based guitarist and composer Eric St-Laurent. With plenty of time set aside to write\, undisturbed by the fast pace of our ever-changing world\, the creation\, editing\, and mixing of this album took place over several months in Berlin and Toronto. Every step of the production was slow\, relaxed\, and deliberate. \nSt-Laurent conceived this set of music with his
long-time friend Sebastian Studnitzky in mind. The Berlin-based trumpeter’s soft\, reflective tone lends an introspective quality to the recording. The fiery rhythm section of Michel DeQuevedo (percussion) and Jordan O’Connor (bass) provides a muscular counterpoint\, while St-Laurent’s post-Benson approach to the guitar supplies the blues. \nBorn and raised in Montreal\, St-Laurent studied improvisation in New York before moving to Berlin\, where he toured with both big and small names in the German and Scandinavian music scenes. Since returning to Canada\, he has been leading his own band\, recording and touring extensively throughout Europe and Canada.

SUMMARY:TuneTown - There From Here CD Release Tour!
DESCRIPTION:Kelly Jefferson: saxophones\nArtie Roth: acoustic bass\nErnesto Cervini: drums \nSept 19: Burdock Music Hall\, Toronto\, ON. 9pm. \nSept 20: Cafe Resonance\, Montreal\, QC. 6pm. \nSept 21: GigSpace\, Ottawa\, ON. 9pm. \nThere From Here is the exciting debut album from Canada’s newest collective\, chordless trio\, TuneTown. \nFormed in 2015\, TuneTown pools the creativity of three of Canada’s top jazz improvisers; Kelly Jefferson (Saxophones)\, Artie Roth (Bass) and Ernesto Cervini (Drums). \nThe group performs original music composed by and for the trio\, bringing together three distinct musical voices on material that runs the gamut\, from intense to sublime. Seamlessly assimilating elements from the avant garde\, funk\, and jazz worlds\, There From Here is a welcome addition to the saxophone trio tradition. \nThe album plays out like a story\, intended to be listened to from top to bottom. In today’s “shuffle” society\, this is a breath of fresh air. Starting with A Sonic Handshake\, the listener is welcomed into the world of TuneTown. What follows is a series of tunes and moods\, ranging from the swinging Monks of Oka (dedicated to the great Thelonious Monk) to the sublime closer\, A Transient Space. In between there are also 2 standards arranged by the band; a gorgeous reworking of Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Lady and a swinging reharmonization of Cole Porter’s All of You. In addition\, the listener is treated to the cheeky nature of the group with The Mayor: a nod to municipal leaders of the world\, and a tip of the cap to Toronto’s more “colourful” mayors from past years. \nwww.tunetownjazz.com \nRelease Date: September 20th\, 2019 from Slammin Media and Believe Distibution

SUMMARY:Sam Kirmayer Trio feat. Ben Paterson - Canadian Tour
DESCRIPTION:Montreal guitarist Sam Kirmayer started 2018 on a high note.  \nA few weeks into the new year\, he won the Julian Award for Excellence for Emerging Canadian Artists\, a prize given by Simon Fraser University’s CJSF 90.1FM to an album by a young Canadian jazz up-and-comer. Kirmayer’s 2017 debut disc\, a quartet release called Opening Statement\, richly deserved the recognition. For an encore\, Kirmayer has climbed further still\, with his new album High and Low\, which finds the 28-year-old devotee of bop and swing assuredly leading an organ trio.  \nKirmayer chose wisely when he picked sidemen for his new project that casts his warm tone and lyrical focus in a different setting. On drums\, it was a no-brainer to play again with veteran Montreal drummer Dave Laing\, who laid down the unflinching\, impeccable groove on Opening Statement. “Dave has been one of my favourite musicians for a while\,” says Kirmayer. “I’ve learned a lot playing with him over the last few years and he brought so much to the first CD we made together that it was never a question for me that I wanted him on this record as well.”  \nHiring New York-based organist Ben Paterson on organ\, a 35-year-old who demonstrates consummate taste and fire on High and Low\, was more of a leap of faith. “I discovered Ben through his work with Bernstein and Bobby Broom\,” Kirmayer explains. “He’s got such a great sense of swing and is a truly melodic improviser. When I found out he was a friend of a friend\, I jumped at the chance to do some playing with him.”  \nThe band prepped by playing two nights at Montreal’s lynchpin jazz venue\, the Upstairs Jazz Bar and Grill\, and then went into the studio for two days. They might have begun as two friends and an out-of-towner stranger\, but the simpatico and eloquence that they’ve achieved on High and Low sound like the hallmarks of a seasoned band.  \nSam Kirmayer: guitar\nBen Paterson: organ\nDave Laing: drums \nSept 19: Avalanche Bar\, Courtenay\, BC – presented by the Georgia Straight Jazz Society. 7:30pm. \nSept 20: All Saints by the Sea\, Salt Spring Island\, BC – presented by Salt Spring Jazz & Blues. 7pm. \nSept 21: Hermann’s\, Victoria\, BC. 8pm. \nSept 22: Osborne Bay Pub\, Crofton\, BC – presented by Pat’s House of Jazz. 2pm. \nSept 22: Lighthouse Bistro\, Nanaimo\, BC. 7:30pm. \nSept 25: Frankie’s Jazz Club\, Vancouver\, BC – presented by Coastal Jazz. 8pm. \nSept 26: The Nexus\, Salmon Arm\, BC – presented by Salmon Arm Jazz Club. 7pm. \nSept 27: Lolita’s\, Calgary\, AB. 7pm. \nSept 28: Yardbird Suite\, Edmonton\, AB. 8pm. \nSept 29: The Artesian\, Regina\, SK. 7pm. SUMMARY:Audrey Ochoa Trio: 2019 Summer Jazz Festival Tour
DESCRIPTION:Audrey Ochoa: trombone\nMike Lent: bass\nSandro Dominelli: drums \n\n\n\nTrombonist Audrey Ochoa is a rising star on the Canadian jazz scene. After having completed studies in classical trombone at the University of Alberta\, Audrey began performing professionally across Canada and abroad as a member of multiple ensembles. Though never having formally studied Jazz or contemporary music\, Audrey has found a home in composing her own tunes that often have a Latin feel\, and definitely convey her sense of humour. \nPJ Perry describes Audrey as “a real talent\,” and mentor and trombone aster Hugh Fraser describes her as “an inspired emerging artist that embodies the talent\, inspiration and focus to make a major contribution at the highest level.” Having worked with or shared a stage with jazz legends like Hilario Duran\, PJ Perry\, and Tommy Banks\, Audrey has also played with international musicians like Lew Tebackin\, Dan Akroyd and the Temptations. \nAudrey released her debut album “Trombone and Other Delights” in 2013\, which spent consecutive weeks as the number one Jazz album on the Earshot charts and received excellent reviews. \n\n\n\nAudrey’s second album “Afterthought\,” is an extension of her compositional skill and talent on her instrument. SUMMARY:Michael Davidson & Dan Fortin: Clock Radio CD Release
DESCRIPTION:Michael Davidson: vibraphone\nDan Fortin: bass \nOpening: Chris Pruden \nVibraphonist Michael Davidson (Hobson’s Choice\, Otterville) and double bassist Dan Fortin (Myriad3\, Bernice) are two of Toronto’s most in demand musicians. They have been playing together for over a decade: in the experimental jazz-rock band Stop Time; on Fortin’s 2015 album Brinks; and in groups lead by the likes of Tara Davidson and Allison Au. Having been hired so often as a team\, it made perfect sense for the two to focus on the unique musical aesthetic they’ve cultivated over the years. Hence\, the birth of a new duo and a new album: Clock Radio. \nThere is no musical setting more intimate than the duo. Each musical gesture is exposed\, and without empathic listening on the part of both musicians\, it cannot succeed. In the summer of 2017\, Davidson traveled to Berlin to study with renowned mallet percussionist David Friedman. In the course of his two month trip\, Davidson experimented with a variety of new compositional techniques\, and returned to Canada with a new book of songs that he felt best suited the flexibility of the duo setting. These pieces blur the line between composition and improvisation\, and draw equally from jazz\, free music\, and classical composition. \nClock Radio will be released on Elastic Recordings on Friday\, March 22nd\, 2019.

SUMMARY:Sam Broverman "A Jewish Boy's Christmas" CD Release!
DESCRIPTION:A holiday show for the “mishpocha” (and everyone else)\nFeaturing bassist Jordan O’Connor\, pianist Peter Hill\, special guest Whitney Ross-Barris plus members of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir \nWhite Christmas. Let it Snow. Baby It’s Cold Outside. Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer. What do these popular Christmas songs have in common (aside from driving you crazy while you do your Christmas shopping)? Some of the most popular Christmas songs of all time (5 of the top 10\, according to ASCAP) were written by Jewish songwriters like Irving Berlin\, Sammy Cahn\, Jule Styne\, Frank Loesser\, and Johnny Marks. \nThis holiday season\, Toronto jazz singer Sam Broverman will again explore and celebrate what it means to be a “Jewish boy” at Christmas time (last year’s show was sold out). In A Jewish Boy’s Christmas\, Sam recalls his own experiences as a Jewish boy in the very ethnically mixed north end of Winnipeg\, and ties them to the Jewish influence on the Great American Christmas songbook in stories and songs\, with a few surprises. \nWith Jordan O’Connor on bass\, Peter Hill on piano\, and guest singer Whitney Ross-Barris (of whom Sam will ask the musical question Can I Interest You In Hannukah?; be there to hear her answer)\, plus a special appearance by members of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. A Jewish Boy’s Christmas promises to be a hilarious and touching holiday night out whether you celebrate Christmas or Hannukah…or none of the above! Here is a clip from last year’s show in which Sam explains\, in song\, how to speak Yiddish: You’re Speaking Yiddish. \nMore about Sam: Sam Broverman is a Toronto based jazz singer and songwriter\, as well as a professor of Actuarial Mathematics at the University of Toronto. He has performed in Winnipeg\, Vancouver\, New York and Hong Kong\, and he regularly performs in jazz venues around Toronto. He began his professional singing career in Winnipeg at the age of 19\, appearing in theatre and cabaret productions as well as on nationally televised music and variety shows\, including Hymn Sing and The Doug Crosley Show. Sam has sung with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir since moving to Toronto.

SUMMARY:Lawful Citizen - 'Internal Combustion' Album Release Party!
DESCRIPTION:Evan Shay: tenor sax\nAime Duquet: guitar\nAntoine Pelegrin: electric bass\nKyle Hutchins: drums \nFeaturing Special Guest John Hollenbeck\, opening the show! \nInternal Combustion is the first full-length record from the Montreal-based band\, Lawful Citizen. Fueled by a fiery vision\, the music takes a deep journey through the entire spectrum of human emotion. This album is influenced by the history of the internal combustion engine\, particularly in the early days of motorcycle racing and land speed record attempts. The feeling of grit\, brutality and rawness\, along with the entire sensory experience surrounding the extreme danger were the largest inspirations for this music. \n\n\n\n\nFearlessly combining jazz\, metal\, electronic\, and Americana\, Lawful Citizen is an explosive force on the Canadian jazz scene. Formed in 2015 after meeting at McGill University\, the band name reflects the discord felt by the common man\, between remaining complacent and refusing to abide. The pendulum of their music swings from subtle beauty to relentless rage\, driven by the musicality and sensitivity of the four musicians. \nAfter developing the music over a course of a year\, the tracks were recorded\, mixed\, and mastered in Montreal. The resulting journey weaves together the somber and the rough. The band’s signature sound is on full display with searing sax\, erce guitar\, guttural bass\, and propulsive drums. Their raucous blend of musical brutality\, heavy emotion\, and forward momentum is perfect for this moment in time.

SUMMARY:The Marie Goudy 12tet feat. Jocelyn Barth - 'The Bitter Suite' CD Release!
DESCRIPTION:Marie Goudy – Trumpet & Voice\nJocelyn Barth – Voice\nBrad Eaton – Trumpet & Flugelhorn\nMatt Woroshyl – Alto & Soprano Saxophones\nJohn Nicholson – Tenor Saxophone & Voice\nConrad Gluch – Baritone Saxophone\nCharlotte Alexander – French Horn\nPaul Tarussov – Trombone\nZach Smith – Trombone\nChris Platt – Guitar\nJosh Smiley – Piano\nAlex Lakusta – Bass\nKeagan Eskritt – Drums\nAndrés Gándara – Vihuela \n\n\n\n\nToronto trumpeter and composer Marie Goudy’s debut album The Bitter Suite is an ambitious and beautiful act of storytelling – a vivid depiction of young love as reflected in the distinct character of each of the year’s four seasons. This haunting\, lyrical song cycle features her lifelong friend\, vocalist Jocelyn Barth\, and 10 of Toronto’s most exciting young instrumentalists. \nIn four movements\, the lyrics express the excitement of new summer love; the warmth and comfort of a new partnership in autumn; the distinctive chill that only heartbreak in winter can bring; and the wistfulness of spring\, when new growth brings a reminder of past loves now lost. \nThe Bitter Suite is an exciting addition to Canada’s large jazz ensemble tradition. Producer John MacLeod – one of Canada’s best known big band leaders and trumpeters – helps connect it to that storied history. In addition to jazz influences\, The Bitter Suite is also heavily informed by mariachi music\, a style in which Marie has worked for years – it features pieces written in the Son Jailciense and Huapango styles.

SUMMARY:John Pittman - 'Kinship' CD Release!
DESCRIPTION:John Pittman: trumpet\nShirantha Beddage: baritone saxophone\nJeff McLeod: piano\nMike Downes: bass\nCurtis Nowosad: drums \n\n\n\n\nIt has been said that a musician should “tell a story” when they play and storytelling\, at its core\, is really all about relationships. How characters interact\, how they grow or change\, and how the audience relates to\, responds to or empathizes with those characters is essential. It is the relationships that bring meaning: to the story\, its characters\, its audience\, its author. That is why Kinship is at the heart of this album; it tells the story of the relationships and experiences that inform the artist and bring meaning to the music. \nKinship is the debut solo release from Toronto- based trumpet player John Pittman (The Heavyweights Brass Band\, Composer’s Collective Big Band)\, and features a stellar cast of musicians that were chosen in keeping with the overarching narrative of this record. Shirantha Beddage\, Jeff McLeod\, Mike Downes and Curtis Nowosad all share a history and a connection with John and\, while they are all musical giants individually\, their collective studio chemistry is palpable on this release. \nKinship is the story of the people and experiences that make us who we are; that which brings meaning to our narrative and communicates what matters most to us. Here’s hoping you find kinship with the artists through your experience of the music.

SUMMARY:The Tiki Collective: 'Muse' CD Album Release!
DESCRIPTION:Muse is the debut album by The Tiki Collective: an all-star Toronto band featuring fifteen incredible guest vocalists. \nThe name Muse carries with it two meanings: Firstly as a noun\, “to honour a person who is a source of artistic inspiration”\, and secondly as a verb\, because they “mused” over how to create a fresh new sound. The album is a blend of exotica\, jazz\, and pop music that will have you dreaming of beaches\, palm trees\, and wondrous sunsets. The melodies are timeless\, while the production is modern and seamless. \nThe recording features new arrangements of popular songs including “Don’t Fear The Reaper” and “The Sweetest Taboo\,” as well as exquisite classic rarities such as “All Too Soon” and “Chelsea Bridge.” Also featured are original compositions “Dreaming” and “The Wanderer”.

SUMMARY:Aaron Shragge & Ben Monder - 'This World of Dew' CD Release: Montreal
DESCRIPTION:Aaron Shragge: Dragon Mouth Trumpet\, Flugelhorn\, Shakuhachi\nBen Monder: Guitar \nThis World of Dew is Aaron Shragge’s third release with Ben Monder. \nThe duo project\, an exploratory\, meditative collaboration\, has been praised as “…lyrical and heartwarming…” (Jazz Times) and “thoroughly modern with a definitive sound…” (The Birmingham Times). \nThe album features guitarist Ben Monder’s otherworldly harmonic virtuosity in expansive sonic textures that highlight Shragge’s subtle and distinctive lyrical voice on the shakuhachi and dragon mouth trumpet (a custom microtonal instrument). \nThe fourteen new compositions by Shragge are inspired by the writings of both ancient and modern poets: Kobayashi Issa\, Matsuo Bashō\, Li Po\, Nishiyama Sōin and Charles Bukowski. \nTracks 2-7 make up “This World of Dew Suite” which follows the emotional arc of poet Kobahashi Issa’s grief as he mourned the loss of his young daughter. What ties all these compositions together is how they explore themes of loneliness\, perseverance and impermanence.
