SUMMARY:Ruth Saphir "Accolades of Time" Album Release Concert
DESCRIPTION:Ruth Saphir – vocals & fluteKate Wyatt – pianoSummer Kodama – bassIvan – Bramford – drumsGenevieve Gauthier – sax \n\n\n\nPart of the Orchard of Pomegranates soirée at Café la Ligne Verte \n\n\n\nOn this\, her fifth album\, Ruth Saphir ventures into profound internal conversations with her ancestors\, with an imagined child\, with broken loves. We are invited to journey inward with her\, stepping through the Accolades of Time\, in a beautifully crafted book of songs. Saphir navigates the deep oceans of time\, in a journey of self-exploration that is both personal and universal. In these compositions she harmonizes the tangible and the imagined\, as the dream\, the nightmare and the awakened reality all resonate. \n\n\n\nThe album opens with Ancestral Shadows\, inviting us to embrace the shadows we carry throughout our lives\, followed by the lyrical question: “Where Do Dreams Go?”— dreams being the safe space to escape the grief and sorrows of waking life. Saphir\, the daughter of Holocaust survivors\, gives voice to her shadows and dreams with grace\, humour and sensuality. The album closes with the title track\, Accolades of Time\, asking “Could we step onto a stage / Into the spotlight\, into the limelight / Through the Accolades of Time?” In this album\, Saphir does just that\, putting her heart vulnerably in the spotlight\, inviting us to hear our own stories within hers.  \n\n\n\nWhen Saphir writes “If you really want the rhythm\, find it in your body\,” she knows what she is talking about. For over 25 years\, she’s has been a music therapist and sound healer\, working with adults and youths to address their physical\, emotional and spiritual challenges. This extensive experience informs her holistic approach to music. “Composing and improvising sustain and nurture my creative soul” she says. Her voice adds a heart-felt\, full bodied dimension to every song and her flute solos are like the fluttering of a bird’s wing\, soaring high.

SUMMARY:Marie Goudy's Paloma Sky: 'Hold On To Me' Album Release!
DESCRIPTION:Marie Goudy – Trumpet\, VoiceJocelyn Barth – VoiceStu Harrison – PianoNick Arsenault – Bass\, VoiceAndrew Scott – Drums\, Voice \n\n\n\nFeaturing Alison Young – Alto Sax (10)Produced by Elizabeth Shepherd \n\n\n\nHold On to Me is the debut full-length album by Toronto jazz-pop quintet Paloma Sky. It features ten tracks composed and arranged by bandleader and trumpet player Marie Goudy\,  and showcases the sensational voice of lead singer Jocelyn Barth. The music traverses a wide range of jazz sub-genres\, from Latin to soul to swing\, but the common thread is a strong foundation of catchy melodies and rich grooves. The album delves into themes of love\, passion\, and triumph. Even the songs that address themes of loneliness and heartbreak  are infused with positive energy as Goudy finds the beauty in the pain. \n\n\n\nGoudy’s main compositional influences are Stevie Wonder\, Maria Schneider\, and Kenny Wheeler. She approaches writing music as though she were writing a novel: establishing a harmonic and melodic ‘setting’ that the listener can immerse themselves in\, and using unexpected harmonic shifts as ‘plot twists’ that delight the ear\, ultimately culminating in a narrative climax. \n\n\n\nMarie Goudy’s fiery trumpet solos are a standout feature of the album\, adding an energetic spark and dynamic range to each piece. Paloma Skyconsists of vocalist Jocelyn Barth\, trumpet player Marie Goudy\, pianist Stu Harrison\, bassist Nick Arseneau\, and drummer Andrew Scott. Four out of the five musicians are accomplished vocalists\, and Hold On to Me makes full use of their skills with lush\, four-part vocal harmonies throughout the album. The record is produced by six-time JUNO nominee Elizabeth Shepherd\, whose contribution imparts a pop sensibility to an album that remains firmly rooted in its jazz foundations. \n\n\n\nPaloma Sky’s music is enjoyed by a broad range of audiences. Even listeners who usually shy away from jazz find themselves enthralled with the band’s sound. This album has something for everyone\, whether they’re a die-hard jazz fan or completely new to the genre.

SUMMARY:Jake Noble 'Letting Go of a Dream' Album Release!
DESCRIPTION:Autumn Dominguez – Alto SaxophoneMike Clement – GuitarSeth Collins – PianoJake Noble – Bass\, CompositionsTanner Guss – Drums  \n\n\n\nJake Noble is a bassist and composer based in New Orleans\, where he is well known as both a bandleader and in-demand sideman. His debut album Letting Go of a Dream was initially conceived as a platform to honor his greatest musical influences: Bill Evans\, Charlie Haden\, and Kenny Garrett. Early on in the writing process though\, a more complete vision for the album began to emerge. “As I began writing this music\, I realized that I wanted to convey the story of my own journey of self-discovery in the midst of our overwhelmingly digitized society.”  \n\n\n\nEach piece on the album represents a step forward on the journey towards self-acceptance. What Could Have Been – inspired by the Bill Evans composition Time Remembered – conveys a sense of vulnerability with its broken time feel and unexpected  harmonic cadences. Acceptance of the Journey is the most involved composition on the album\, featuring several stylistic changes throughout the piece. This song is about dealing with the sudden changes life sometimes throws your way when you least expect it. “I like to think about how we go about living our lives with everything going according to plan and then – bam – all of a sudden something or someone comes into our life and changes its trajectory in a single moment.” Noble wrote Farewell to the Kid from Spring with an intimate bass and piano duo in mind. “This piece is about longing for simpler times in the Arkansas wilderness\, away from my current noisy city life.” Throughout the tune the chemistry between Noble and Collins is apparent\, as they conjure a dream-like state together. \n\n\n\nLetting Go of a Dream represents the next stage of Noble’s search for authenticity as both a bassist and composer. Itis an exciting musical statement by a fine up and coming New Orleans musician.

SUMMARY:Christopher Parnis - 'Everything You Could Be' Album Release!
DESCRIPTION:Christian Antonacci – Trumpet & FlugelhornMatt Greenwood – Electric GuitarBrian Dickinson – PianoChristopher Parnis – Double BassAaron Blewett – Drum Set \n\n\n\nFor several years now\, bassist Christopher Parnis has been making a name for himself on the Canadian jazz scene as both an elevating sideman and a driven bandleader. In 2019\, he began assembling a quintet of his own to develop and perform his original music. He started with his oldest musical colleague\, fellow Peterborough\, Ontario born musician Aaron Blewett on drums. He then added Zimbabwean guitarist Matt Greenwood\, Toronto-based trumpeter Christian Antonacci\, and acclaimed Canadian pianist and two-time JUNO award winner Brian Dickinson. It is with this band that Christopher recorded his debut album Everything You Could Be\, adynamic  recording that chronicles his journey to Toronto to pursue his art. \n\n\n\nEverything You Could Be finds Parnis and his bandmates playing memorable compositions that move fluidly from cutting-edge modern jazz\, to heartbreaking ballads\, to free improvisation and back again. Augmented by subtle overdubbing\, the band explores soundscapes that are fully acoustic as well as ones far more surreal\, all while maintaining a close connection to their strong Canadian jazz roots. \n\n\n\nInfluences on the album vary broadly. Some will come as no surprise to the listener\, such as the work of Canadian composer and musical innovator Kenny Wheeler. Others are far more eclectic\, including the  mission of the mars rover and the work of horror novelist Clive Barker. These influences\, when combined with Parnis’ commitment to melody above all else\, create a record that Canadian jazz legend Don Thompson describes as “hauntingly beautiful.”

SUMMARY:The Brenan Brothers: 'Valley of Silence' Album Release!
DESCRIPTION:Craig Brenan – TromboneJim Brenan – Tenor & Soprano SaxophonesDavid Lavoie – TrumpetSean Craig – Alto & Baritone SaxophonesEarl MacDonald – PianoJon Wielebnowski – BassAfo Fapujuwo – Drums \n\n\n\nImagine: ten-year-old twin brothers Jim and Craig\, standing nervously in the doorway of the Palms Cafe in Edmonton on a warm summer night in 1979. Their dad has taken them to their first concert featuring the instruments that they’re hoping to play when they enter junior high in the fall. Neither has any idea what they’re about to experience\, but the excitement in the room speaks volumes: they’re in for something special. “All I recall is the sheer force of the trumpet and the incredible speed and energy that the band performed with\,”recalls Jim. The band was trumpet legend Woody Shaw’s quintet: a group that would forever imprint itself on the Brenan Brothers. They’ve been seeking to recreate that musical energy for their entire musical careers. \n\n\n\nHaving collectively performed with the likes of Maynard Ferguson\, Randy Brecker\, Ralph Bowen\, Geoff Keezer\, Bryan Lynch\, Terrell Stafford\, Luis Bonilla\, Sam Rivers\, Bob Brookmeyer\, Curtis Fuller\, Slide Hampton\, and Kenny Wheeler\, Craig and Jim Brenan have established an iron-clad reputation as a pair of dynamic and accomplished musicians\, always seeking new musical challenges that push them to their creative limits. \n\n\n\nSays Craig: “I always liked the analogy that the pursuit of mastery is like climbing a mountain: it can be arduous\, but the results are incredible.” To that end\, the Brenan Brothers have recorded an album that focuses on the music that first made such an indelible impression on them: jazz from the creatively  fertile but often overlooked late 1970s\, featuring blistering solos and tight arrangements. The “climb” continues\, as this album undoubtedly demonstrates. This is the perfect time to document the latest iteration of their band. \n\n\n\nTheValley of Silence is a collection of arrangements and original compositions that have been rumbling around in the  brothers’ collective consciousness for the past decade. The originals on the Valley of Silence were written with a spirit of abandon in mind: these pieces are soulful and meditative; complex\, yet accessible. This album encourages the listener to take a journey back to a time when jazz was all about connecting to the music and telling one’s own story. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\ncraigbrenan.com

SUMMARY:Natasha Blackwood 'Love Songs for Good Machines' Album Release at the Majestic!
DESCRIPTION:Newfoundland vocalist and saxophonist Natasha Blackwood’s Love Songs for Good Machines is a jazz album with pop sensibilities rooted in modern-day folk storytelling. These songs are love letters to the working class\, addressing themes of labour\, love and resilience. They are sharp and witty\, tongue-in-cheek\, and rich with subtle Newfoundlandia. They bring to mind the work of Joni Mitchell at mid-career: these are songs that bend notions of genres and take risks\, with soaring melodies and thoughtful stories framed by arrangements that sound both complex and effortless at once. \n\n\n\n“Good machine” is a term used in Newfoundland for something that lasts a long time. It might break down\, but it never wears out: it ‘takes a lickin’ but keeps on tickin.’ With this new album\, Blackwood looks at the working-class of her native province in this same light\, exploring how a person is valued for their productivity\, and only celebrated once they are worn out for good. \n\n\n\nThese songs tell stories about the frustration that comes from working hard without getting ahead; about the intense gratitude for love\, family\, and the ability to get by; and the need for validation for being a good worker. This album explores the idea of being enough – in the workplace\, in the home\, and in our relationships. Each song was written by Blackwood for a real person with resilience and grit – terms that are often used to describe the people of Newfoundland\, but not exactly in this context. To hear these kinds of songs and stories within a jazz context is something uniquely refreshing\, ear-bending\, and somehow familiar at the same time.

SUMMARY:Tevet Sela 'Sweet Tears' Album Release at The Rex!
DESCRIPTION:Four nights at the Rex! June 5\, 6\, 7\, & 8.Sets at 8:30 and 10pm \n\n\n\nSince moving to Montreal in 2010\, saxophonist and composer Tevet Sela has quickly become a prominent figure in Canada’s vibrant jazz scene. His first seven albums – Tevet Sela (2003)\, Coming True (2007)\, Jazz Flute (2010)\, Lying Sun (2014)\, The River (2017)\, Mizmor (2019)\, and Live at The Rex (2023) – received rave reviews. Sela’s latest album Sweet Tears is a deeply personal and emotional album\, one that aims straight for the heart. The album’s rich mosaic of songs address the constantly shifting balance of happiness and sadness in our lives. \n\n\n\nFor over two decades\, Sela has performed at countless international jazz festivals and venues\, and was nominated for both the Montreal International Jazz Festival’s TD Grand Jazz Award and the Prix Opus for Jazz Concert of the Year. \n\n\n\nThe music in Sweet Tears is not of a purist nature. As a musical melting pot\, the album weaves together klezmer and middle-eastern scales\, rhythms\, harmonies\, and inflexions\, mixing them with sounds from the R&B and Latin jazz traditions. \n\n\n\nSongs like Shabbaton and Sweet Tears have lyrical\, hymn-like melodies\, while the bouncy Omaya is anexpression of liberation; joyous and celebratory. In Naked Soul\, Sela’s gorgeous tone evokes the sound of a gospel choir\, while Far Yet Close conjures images of a middle-eastern desert landscape. \n\n\n\nThese meticulously written\, melody-driven compositions\, performed by some of the most sought-after musicians in Canada\, make this album an immediate stand out. Sweet Tears takes the listener on an introspective journey. Its purifying effect will leave you with a long lasting\, soulful mark. Let yourself be touched by it and taken by its charms. \n\n\n\nSweet Tears will be released worldwide on Friday\, June 14th 2024.

SUMMARY:Kari van der Kloot 'Window' Album Release!
DESCRIPTION:Kari van der Kloot’s third album Window draws elements from different genres of music while keeping the spirit of jazz at the forefront. Window is anchored by Kari’s ethereal vocals floating over rich\, earthy layers of flutes and synthesizers\, and nuanced and thoughtful playing by the rhythm section. Featuring ten original compositions (including a setting of a poem by Pablo Neruda)\, the music glides seamlessly between intricately arranged ensemble playing and improvised abandon. Kari has an innate skill for crafting approachable melodies that belie the depth and complexity of her compositions.  \n\n\n\nThis album features a stellar cast of New York based musicians: flautist Elsa Nilsson\, keyboardist Jamie Reynolds\, bassist Gary Wang and drummer Nathan Ellman-Bell. This is an ensemble that has been working together for years\, and it certainly shows. Kari’s longtime rhythm section plays with a masterful level of communication. The addition of flute phenom Elsa Nilsson to the quintet adds a unique and unexpected layer to Kari’s songs. Together\, these five musicians establish an atmosphere of trust and freedom throughout the album. Each musician’s individual voice shines through clearly in each song while they weave a multi-layered musical tapestry together.  \n\n\n\nWith an inquisitive and searching tone\, Kari vulnerably lays it all on the line. Many of these songs were written during the early days of the pandemic in New York City: Kari’s deeply personal lyrics reflect on the difficult balance between isolation  and the needs of a community\, as well as the growth that can come from periods of solitude. Totem was inspired by the work of Ruth Bader Ginsberg and features a swirling\, fast-moving onslaught of chords with fleeting moments of repetition. The song Trust Exercise explores trust issues while featuring a mysterious\, hard-to-grasp intro of layered flutes and vocals. Sprout shows the ensemble communicating at its best\, revisiting past trauma and the growth it inspires. The album culminates with Keeping Quiet\, a setting of Pablo Neruda’s poem A callarse. A stunning duet between Kari and pianist Jamie Reynolds\, Neruda’s text implores us to take the time to be still in our lives.

SUMMARY:Ernesto Cervini's Turboprob @ Jazz Bistro!
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating their brand new release ‘A Canadian Songbook’ \n\n\n\nTara Davidson – Alto SaxophoneJoel Frahm – Tenor SaxophoneWilliam Carn – Trombone Adrean Farrugia – Piano Dan Loomis – Bass Ernesto Cervini – Drums  \n\n\n\nMay 24 & 25 \n\n\n\nSets @ 8 and 9:30pm \n\n\n\nFollowing up his ambitious JUNO Award-nominated 2022 album Joy (“a compositional tour-de-force\, with strong melodies scored for diverse instrumentations” — Ted Panken\, DownBeat)\, Toronto drummer and composer Ernesto Cervini is proud to announce the release of A Canadian Songbook\, a vivid\, fiery\, insightful exploration of music composed by Canadians. This outing finds Cervini returning to the helm of his accomplished and long-running sextet Turboprop\, with a thick\, contrapuntal three-horn sound that’s been developing over the course of three previous albums: Abundance (2018)\, Rev (2017) and Turboprop (2015). Turboprop’s personnel also played an important role on Joy\, along with a cast of singers and members of Cervini’s other projects\, notably Tetrahedron and TuneTown.  \n\n\n\nOn A Canadian Songbook it’s Turboprop all the way\, soaring on a couple of impressive Cervini originals and arrangements of the pop/rock numbers “When I Fall” by The Barenaked Ladies and “Clumsy” by Toronto’s own Our Lady Peace. Brilliant tunes by Cervini’s contemporaries and friends\, Allison Au (“Aureole”)\, James Hill (“Skeletons”) and Turboprop trombonist William Carn (“The Inertia of Complacency”) round out the program. “The two pop songs on the record I’ve been listening to since they were released\, when I was a teenager\,” Cervini says. “Allison’s and James’ songs I fell in love with while working publicity for their albums\,” he adds\, alluding to his role as founding director of Orange Grove Publicity.  \n\n\n\nWith two saxes (Tara Davidson\, Joel Frahm) and Carn’s trombone offering harmonic richness\, limitless versatility and off-the-charts improvisational prowess\, Cervini can tell the story of what these songs inspire in him\, aided by the eloquent\, formidable rhythm section partners Dan Loomis (bass) and Adrean Farrugia (piano). “I’m happy to present my reflection on the Canadian music scene and the wonderful composers within it\,” writes Cervini in the liner notes. “I’ve always been very proud of my Canadian heritage. I love how supportive this country is of artists\, and I think that support is reflected in the success Canadian artists have on a global scale.”

SUMMARY:Gabriel Genest 'As It Is' Album Release Celebration
DESCRIPTION:As It Is is Montreal saxophonist Gabriel Genest’s second album as a leader. A follow up to his debut album Triptyque (winner of the Prix François-Marcaurelle from the 2021 OFF Festival de Jazz de Montréal)\, As It Is is a compelling new album with a resolutely modern aesthetic marked by complex rhythms\, modal harmony\, and sophisticated melodies. These eight new compositions draw just as much influence from classical impressionist music as they do from the American and European jazz traditions. \n\n\n\nWith this album\, Genest wanted to bring together two worlds that are dear to him: jazz improvisation and mindfulness meditation\, which he has been practicing diligently for 10 years. “It’s a practice that’s very important to me and feeds my creative process\,” explains the saxophonist. The pieces on the album explore various themes at the heart of meditation\, including the quest for balance\, the perception of time\, interdependence and impermanence. Three tracks on this predominantly instrumental album are musical settings of Zen poems performed by singer Jeanne Laforest (Puisque les heures nous manquent\, 2022). \n\n\n\nThe warm\, subtle\, yet powerful sound of Genest’s tenor saxophone is supported by the exceptional musicianship of three long-time accomplices: Alex Le Blanc on double bass\, Guillaume Pilote on drums and Yannick Anctil on piano. This core group is joined by guests who contribute strong\, original musical personalities to the album: Jeanne Laforest on vocals\, Jean-Nicolas Trottier on trombone and Olivier Salazar on vibraphone.

SUMMARY:Brenda Earle Stokes 'Motherhood' Album Release!
DESCRIPTION:Doors @ 6Show 6:30-7:45 \n\n\n\nMotherhood is a collection of songs by Canadian born\, NYC based pianist\, vocalist and composer Brenda Earle Stokes. A natural multitasker\, Stokes has fused a passion for the piano and a love of singing into a vibrant career that crosses genres organically. A native of Sarnia\, Ontario\, Canada\, Brenda’s career has taken her across Canada and the US\, and internationally performing at venues like the Kennedy Center\, Carnegie Hall\, the Toronto Jazz festival\, Avery Fischer Hall and the Christchurch Arts Festival in New Zealand.  \n\n\n\nMotherhood shares the journey of motherhood with songs exploring identity\, fear\, expectations\, body image\, friendship and growth. Inspired by her own life as a mother\, Stokes started composing this music during the early days of her son’s life\, jotting words in a notebook while pushing her son’s stroller around their New York City neighborhood.   \n\n\n\nEight years later\, Brenda Earle Stokes was invited to a music residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Alberta\, Canada\, where she completed the bulk of the songs for this project. Armed with dozens of saved voice memos in her iPhone and journals full of lyric ideas and observations\, she composed 8 songs in only 9 days. \n\n\n\nRooted in the harmonic and improvisational language of jazz\, Stokes drew additional inspiration from singer-songwriters\, musical theatre\, spoken word and 1960s protest songs. Each song is richly orchestrated by a four-piece ensemble jazz ensemble featuring bassist Evan Gregor and drummer Ross Pederson\, with additional support from vocalists Melissa Stylianou and Nicole Zuraitis. Special guest trumpet player Ingrid Jensen rounds out the group\, having been especially drawn to this project as a fellow mom. The ensemble provides an energetic backdrop for Stokes’ material which is at once honest\, thought provoking and laced with humor.   \n\n\n\nAs the jazz world continues to expand and more women jazz artists are able to tell their stories\, Brenda Earle Stokes’ Motherhood shares vivid stories of contemporary parenthood in a decidedly jazz-forward format.

The album features two vocal numbers\, including D’Alessandro’s arrangement of the classic Gershwin ballad\, Someone to Watch Over Me\, featuring the warm vocals of Benack\, plus a vocal duet filled with scatting\, trading and playful improvisations between Gyorgy and Benack on East of the Sun. \n\n\n\nSearchin’ shows D’Alessandro looking towards the future\, asking what is needed along the way\, and always searching for answers through music\, art and life.

SUMMARY:Dan Loomis 'REVOLUTIONS' Album Release!
DESCRIPTION:REVOLUTIONS is programmatic suite of electrifying and thought-provoking songs and spoken-word pieces meant to serve as a call to the barricades. In a society that is ever more polarized and ossified\, revolutionary thoughts and ideas move us forward to a more open future. But revolutionary action is hard… deciding to make a change is difficult and taking the steps to make that change can be even more arduous. Of course\, as in anything in life\, what we need are the right mentors and the right spark. In the Americas\, our mentors for revolution are the Haitian Revolution (the only revolution in the history of the world in which enslaved people liberated themselves and formed a nation) and the South American liberation from Spain (the only revolution in our hemisphere which envisioned a society inclusive of ALL the peoples of the ‘new world’ — Indigenous\, African and European). And our spark is music! What else can stir the spirit and the emotion deeply enough to rouse us to revolutionary action? We are awash in words and information — what we need is something that can stir us on a deeper level. Music is that spark. \n\n\n\nThe music of REVOLUTIONS draws on music from the pan-American experience. Influences across the countries and history of the Americas comes out in the course of this album. Rooted in jazz\, the music of the Black American experience\, it draws on windy samba-tinged romps\, post-punky electric textures and even reaches into the classical world with chamber music textures. Throughout\, cinematic and haunting melodies wind through the songs\, alternating with fiery episodes of improvisations over adventurous forms and rhythms. The tight ensemble of clarinet\, bass\, guitar and drum set conjures a world of different textures and colors. \n\n\n\nThis ambitious\, large-scale works makes use of a bold new artistic form. The piece alternates between spoken word episodes (accompanied by a smaller musical ensemble of guitar\, tanbou and bass) that poetically evoke the subject matter and instrumental tracks that develop those ideas through music This new form allows the composer\, Dan Loomis\, to tackle the themes of revolution head-on. The spoken-word sets up the heroes and ideals featured in the work\, and the instrumental pieces take the listener to a place beyond facts and rational thought – touching the emotions and rousing the spirit.

SUMMARY:Scott Marshall: 'The Solitude Suite' CD Release!
DESCRIPTION:Scott Marshall: tenor and soprano saxophonesKevin Turcotte: trumpet and flugelhornMike Downes: acoustic bassTerry Clarke: drums \n\n\n\nThe Solitude Suite is saxophonist and composer Scott Marshall’s sixth album of original music. Written for a unique chord-less configuration – and performed by Canadian jazz icons Kevin Turcotte\, Mike Downes\, Terry Clarke\, and Marshall himself –  The Solitude Suite proves once again that Marshall is one of Canada’s most astute and creative jazz composers. \n\n\n\nThe first half of this suite was composed during the Covid-19 pandemic (a literal solitude.) The later half of the suite was composed as the world emerged and struggled with the ‘new normal’ (the figurative solitude.) In jazz music\, chordal instruments typically cover the music’s inner harmonies. They take care of the middle ground\, holding the song together – they play the “butter notes\,” as Miles Davis used to call them. The Solitude Suite however\, has no chordal instruments: the harmony is revealed by the interweaving lines of the trumpet\, saxophone\, and bass. The suite was inspired by the solitudes that seem to exist in our modern world: solitudes created by smart phones\, social media algorithms\, and divisive political discourse. It often feels like society is losing its middle ground\, its common knowledge… in other words\, we can’t always hear the  “butter notes.” \n\n\n\nThis suite is both a reflection on these solitudes and a musical call for more beauty\, hope\, and optimism in the world.

SUMMARY:Will Régnier 'Traces' Album Release!
DESCRIPTION:Marcus Lowry – Electric GuitarYannick Anctil – PianoAlex Le Blanc – Double BassWill Régnier – Drums \n\n\n\nDoors @ 6:30 / Show @ 7:30 \n\n\n\nTraces is the debut album from Montreal drummer\, composer\, and producer Will Régnier. The genre-defying instrumental music on Traces seamlessly blends a variety of styles to create a truly unique and engaging musical universe. Drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of jazz\, folk\, and progressive rock\, the nine pieces on this album signal the arrival of an exciting new voice in Canadian jazz.  \n\n\n\nImprovisation\, spontaneity\, and an interactive spirit serve as the album’s foundation. This infusion of creativity and unpredictability imparts a dynamic vibrancy to the album\, as well as a compelling sense of novelty and vulnerability. \n\n\n\nAt its core\, Traces warmly embraces the lyrical sensibility and storytelling inherent in folk music. The emphasis on melody acts as an anchor; each phrase\, instead of merely serving as a melodic element\, transforms into a narrative vehicle\, unfolding like chapters in a novel. \n\n\n\nThis album also explores the eclecticism and virtuosity of progressive rock. Bold and experimental\, Traces blends intricate time signatures with innovative arrangements that defy conventional expectations. \n\n\n\nRégnier has surrounded himself with some of Montreal’s most extraordinary up and coming musicians: Yannick Anctil on piano\, Marcus Lowry on electric guitar\, and Alex Le Blanc on double bass. Each musician infuses every note with profound meaning\, bringing their unique personality to the music.

SUMMARY:Ernesto Cervini's Turboprop @ The Rex!
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating their upcoming release ‘A Canadian Songbook’ \n\n\n\nFeb 21\, 22\, 23 & 24 \n\n\n\nSets @ 8:30 & 10pm \n\n\n\nTara Davidson – Alto SaxophoneJoel Frahm – Tenor SaxophoneWilliam Carn – Trombone Adrean Farrugia – Piano Dan Loomis – Bass Ernesto Cervini – Drums  \n\n\n\nFollowing up his ambitious JUNO Award-nominated 2022 album Joy (“a compositional tour-de-force\, with strong melodies scored for diverse instrumentations” — Ted Panken\, DownBeat)\, Toronto drummer and composer Ernesto Cervini is proud to announce the release of A Canadian Songbook\, a vivid\, fiery\, insightful exploration of music composed by Canadians.

SUMMARY:Andrea Superstein 'Oh Mother' Album Release Tour
DESCRIPTION:Feb 16: Deep Cove Coffee House – Deep Cove\, BC \n\n\n\nFeb 17: Jazz at the Bolt – Burnaby\, BC \n\n\n\nMarch 16: The Jazz Room – Waterloo\, ON \n\n\n\nMarch 21: The Tasting Lounge – Castleton\, ON \n\n\n\nMarch 22: Kindersley Arts Council – Kindersley\, SK \n\n\n\nMarch 23: The Two Twenty – Saskatoon\, SK \n\n\n\nApril 6: Vernon Jazz Club – Vernon\, BC \n\n\n\nMay 3: Upstairs – Montreal\, QC \n\n\n\nMay 4: Palais Montcalm – Quebec City\, QC \n\n\n\nMay 10: Frankie’s Jazz Club – Vancouver\, BC \n\n\n\nMay 12: Evergreen Cultural Centre – Coquitlam\, BC \n\n\n\nOh Mother was inspired by Vancouver vocalist and composer Andrea Superstein’s own experience as a mother. Between the trauma of birthing a baby and all of the physical changes a mother goes through\, coupled with balancing a job\, feeling out your new role and your place within the world: contrary to popular belief\, mothering can be a very isolating experience. \n\n\n\nThese dark times spurred a lot of questions that Superstein started asking. She wanted to know if the struggles she endured were universal: were they a sign of the times or just hers alone? Superstein interviewed close to 100 mothers to get at the root of motherhood. What were the common experiences\, and why were people so afraid or unable to speak their truth? \n\n\n\nBased on these conversations she wrote music: some songs are one person’s story\, others are of the collective consciousness. Some a stark look at loss\, others describe the heart-exploding feeling a parent can have towards their child. The album represents how all of these opposing feelings can coexist and shines a true light on the complicated\, delicate\, beautiful\, traumatic and messy journey that is motherhood. \n\n\n\nAs a singer “redefining jazz\,” Andrea is one of the most versatile voices in music today. Oh Mother is an ambitious tour de force highlighting her ever growing creativity and sensitivity as a songwriter and arranger.  Expect powerful vocals\, evoking the gentle and the strong\, lithely navigating the colours of the emotional spectrum.

SUMMARY:Disaster Pony Release Concert!
DESCRIPTION:Disaster Pony is a new jazz/EDM band led by Gordon Hyland\, a saxophonist\, multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Toronto. With a Masters in Jazz Performance under his belt from the University of Toronto\, Hyland has built up a reputation as an in-demand session player in Canada’s live music scene\, playing hundreds of shows with the popular cover band Dwayne Gretzky. It was while touring with this band that Hyland connected with his main Disaster Pony collaborators Adam Hindle (Born Ruffians) and Ian Docherty (July Talk.) After all of their shows were unceremoniously cancelled in 2020 (due to a global health crisis that shall not be named…) Hyland and Hindle decided they needed to follow through on an idea they had of making a danceable saxophone record. The album was recorded over two weeks in February and March of 2021. The sessions were meant to be experimental from the beginning. Their thesis was to learn and try to do anything and everything that came to mind\, then figure out how it all worked together after the fact. \n\n\n\nThe Disaster Pony ethos is anchored in the electronic music of artists such as Amon Tobin\, Bonobo and The Herbalist: artists known for combining hip-hip\, downtempo\, and jazz samples. Instead of sampling other artists\, Hindle\, Hyland\, and a roster of other musicians performed their own grooves and improvisations using tracks by the likes of Madlib\, MF Doom\, Beastie Boys\, and WuTang Clang as jumping off points. The recordings were then disassembled and reassembled\, resulting in a record that  is groove-focused\, tape drenched\, saxophone friendly\, and – above all – beautiful. \n\n\n\nThis record features several of Hyland’s closest musical friends. Andrew Roorda is heavily featured with his use of FX pedals\, bringing the bass into the sonic world of synthesizers. Vivienne Wilder adds her voice as a double bassist on the album providing everything from Amon Tobin-like double bass-grooves to soundscapes of layered bowing. Electronic artist Acote adds sound design to several tracks\, further hybridizing the album and bringing it into the world of experimental UK  electronic Jazz. The album also features special guest appearances by cellist Liza McLellan (Quartetto Gelato\, Devah) and violinist Eugene Draw (Dr. Draw).

SUMMARY:Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra with Jill Townsend and Christine Jensen – Tidal Currents: East Meets West Album Release!
DESCRIPTION:The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra (WJO) is Canada’s first community-based\, non-profit professional jazz orchestra. Founded in 1997 (registered as a charity in 2000)\, the WJO has matured to become an important part of Winnipeg’s cultural landscape\, reflected in the ongoing support the organization receives from the Manitoba Arts Council\, the Winnipeg Arts Council\, the Winnipeg Foundation\, and other sponsors.  \n\n\n\nTidal Currents: East Meets West – The WJO’s seventh release – features a commission between two of Canada’s most compelling writers for big band jazz: Jill Townsend and Christine Jensen. The music born of this meeting reflects on the places that meant the most to them\, especially the bodies of water that surrounded them both in their youth up until the present. Townsend captures images and sounds of her east coast upbringing\, unfolding into Jensen’s west coast childhood memories.  \n\n\n\nThe music moves into the waters surrounding them at present\, including Townsend’s now west coast land and waterscape and Jensen’s explorations of her Montreal environs on the powerful St-Lawrence seaway. They have blended their compositions into one suite with the WJO: Tidal Currents\, an East meets West Collaboration. Both composers are featured as guest artists\, with Jill Townsend as conductor and Christine Jensen as soprano saxophone soloist.  \n\n\n\nPresented by Jazz Winnipeg

SUMMARY:Mike Downes Quartet @ Jazz Bistro!
DESCRIPTION:Mike Downes: bassRobi Botos: keyboardsTed Quinlan: guitarsJoaquin Nunez: percussion (Jan. 26)Davide Di Renzo: percussion (Jan. 27) \n\n\n\nTwo nights! Jan 26 & 27 @ 8pm! \n\n\n\nNoted as a profoundly musical bassist with a keen melodic sense\, Toronto-based composer\, arranger and bassist Mike Downes has released a number of award-winning recordings for a variety of instrumentations: from solo bass to trio\, and from quartet to 11-piece ensemble. Guitar great Pat Metheny has called Downes “one of my favorite bass players.” With The Way In\, Downes presents his first recording for piano\, guitar and bass trio featuring his longtime musical collaborators Robi Botos and Ted Quinlan\, alongside Joaquin Nunez Hidalgo and Davide Di Renzo – two extraordinary guest percussionists who appear on five pieces.  \n\n\n\nThe Way In showcases the immense musicality of the core trio. “We have a deep\, deep connection from years of playing together. I wanted to approach this album from a chamber music perspective while showcasing the improvisational brilliance of each musician” notes Downes. “I’ve been writing a lot of arrangements for large ensemble lately\, including symphony orchestra\, and I thought it would be intriguing to distill those compositional techniques and orchestration aesthetics to a drummer-less trio setting\, where all of the nuances are front and centre and the music breathes in a different way.” Quinlan and Botos appeared on both of Downes’ JUNO award-winning albums\, Ripple Effect (2013) and Root Structure (2017). \n\n\n\nThe jazz tradition boasts a rich history of drummer-less trios: the early Ahmad Jamal Trio (including Chamber Music of the New Jazz); the Oscar Peterson Trio with Ray Brown and Herb Ellis; the Nat King Cole trio; the Roy Hargrove/Christian McBride/Stephen Scott Trio; all these and more served as inspiration during the creation of The Way In. \n\n\n\nA prominent fixture on the Canadian and international jazz scenes for years\, Downes has long been praised for his limitless versatility\, seemingly effortless technique\, and his extensive knowledge of not only the bass\, but of the foundations of music in general. “I’m incredibly proud of where I’ve landed as a composer and of the profound musical connections that are evident in this album\,” states Downes. “I feel it’s my best work to date.”
