He’s thrilled to announce the release of his fourth recording: Departures. \n\n\n\nDepartures is a title with many meanings. For Beddage\, the compositions on this album have been influenced by major recent life events\, including the death of his mother\, a new job\, and numerous family trips around the world. \n\n\n\nFor this album\, Beddage felt that it was time for an experiment. He decided to record with a brand new group\, assembled specifically for the session – one with no prior experience performing his music. He assembled some of his favourite Canadian musicians\, each one hailing from a different province. As Beddage recalls: “this process forced me to feel the sense of urgency that I always enjoy in a live setting\, and I loved the challenge. I hope that you will hear that urgency in the music.” \n\n\n\nThe originals and arrangements on this album reflect a broad range of themes\, including Beddage’s desire to explore his Sri Lankan heritage\, his identity as a Canadian living in America\, and his experience as a South Asian with British and European heritage. The six-track album features three Cervini originals — Waiting for a Win\, Water Pistols at Dawn and A Resonant Space — alongside distinctive new arrangements of Glenn Miller’s Moonlight Serenade\, Thelonious Monk’s Evidence and The Smile’s Free in the Knowledge. \n\n\n\nWritten specifically for this new group\, the title track unexpectedly took on what Cervini describes as a “cowboy feel.” Its working title eventually became “Pistols at Dawn\,” but Cervini’s dislike of guns sent it in a more playful direction: Water Pistols at Dawn\, evoking memories of long summer days and water-gun battles at his parents’ cottage. The title suits an album that is sophisticated without taking itself too seriously — adventurous\, melodic and driven by the chemistry of four musicians discovering what they can create together.

Following his well-received EP Maybe\, Live at the Yardbird Suite\, this release is the culmination of a deep study of the bebop language\, combined with the sound and perspective of a contemporary Canadian musician. The album reunites fellow Montréal expats Donny Kennedy (alto saxophone)\, André White (piano)\, Paul Johnston (bass)\, and Dave Laing (drums). Order of Canada recipient and veteran alto saxophonist PJ Perry also appears as a special guest on Cole Porter’s All of You. Each member of the band has supported Do’s development in their own way\, serving variously as mentors\, close collaborators\, and trusted friends throughout his young career. \n\n\n\nRecorded in a single\, continuous 9-hour session\, First Chorus highlights spontaneity and in-the-moment creativity. Throughout the record\, Do explores the balance between written composition and intuitive interaction\, moving from hard-swinging original tunes to intimate interpretations of familiar standards. His compositional approach is rooted in the lexicon of great jazz composers — evident in his homages to Eddie Harris (Hairy Ed) and Lee Konitz (Time-Lee) — while concurrently complemented by a careful selection of lesser-known jazz standards\, such as That’s Earl\, Brother\, and The Highest Mountain. As a saxophonist\, Do’s approach is direct and deeply melodic\, highlighting his attention to sound\, phrasing\, and rhythmic drive. Shades of the great past tenorists\, such as Sonny Rollins and Lester Young\, reveal themselves with confidence in his improvising. \n\n\n\nThe word “first” sustains many meanings in the context of jazz — first sets\, first takes\, first albums\, first notes\, first phrases\, first choruses. In each of these contexts\, a “first” offers a listener an initial glimpse of what is to come: a brief auditory invitation that shapes their expectations and invites them to decide where the music might take them. First Chorus serves not only as Do’s introduction through his debut full-length recording\, but as an accessible example of how quickly jazz can evoke emotion and connection in any listener willing to approach the music with open ears.

This recording project is an authentic collaboration between two artists\, and a living musical document. \n\n\n\nThe project began in late 2019\, when Kuchocki and DiNovi first came together to bring his remarkable songbook to life. What followed became a seven-year journey shaped by circumstances neither artist could have anticipated. The COVID shutdown brought the original sessions to a halt\, and by the time recording became possible again\, DiNovi had largely withdrawn from performing. Determined that the project and its music would not be lost\, Kuchocki continued the work\, bringing together some of Canada’s finest musicians to complete the remaining material while keeping DiNovi’s own performances firmly at the centre of the recording. \n\n\n\nAt the heart of the album is its title song\, But Only For You\, co-written by Gene DiNovi and the venerated\, late jazz chanteuse Peggy Lee\, which has never previously been recorded or released to listeners.Its appearance on the recording reveals a previously unheard chapter connecting two extraordinary songwriting careers. A concept album that celebrates her roots in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia\, Exit 10 is a joyous celebration of place featuring some of Canada’s finest musicians from the jazz and trad scenes. Together\, they dig into a feast of Fiola’s original music – raucous fiddle tunes\, soulful melodies\, and swampy funk grooves. \n\n\n\nOn this new album\, Fiola finds a way to look at familiar places and landscapes with a renewed perspective and a fresh sense of excitement. Each song on Exit 10 is inspired by a location in the Annapolis Valley that was important to her when she was growing up. \n\n\n\nThe record weaves a nostalgic narrative through the fusion of her unique groove-jazz sound with elements of the East Coast music tradition\, including tap dancing\, fiddle and accordion music\, and the sound of the ocean. Merging traditional Celtic instruments with her modern brass band sound became a way to represent who Fiola is as a person and where she is as an artist. It also allowed her to challenge current jazz paradigms and demonstrate how expansive the genre can be. \n\n\n\nThe creation of this album was inspired by Fiola’s move back to the Annapolis Valley after a decade spent living in Halifax. Like many former Haligonians\, she’d been priced out of the city. Initially\, she feared that moving back home would mean sacrificing all of the artistic milestones that she had attained\, and that it would cut her off from the music industry and the relationships she had built along the way. These fears were dispelled when she discovered a welcoming\, thriving arts scene\, and realized that  her old community in Halifax wasn’t so far away after all. Fiola’s rediscovery of the Valley and renewed perspective strengthened her sense of self\, inspiring this beautiful musical dedication to her rural homeland.

DESCRIPTION:Toronto Guitarist Mike Freedman’s latest album Our Time in Space features 11 original contemporary jazz compositions that blend the spirit of traditional and modern jazz with his own distinctive musical voice. Drawing on a deep appreciation for jazz standards while embracing a fresh\, personal approach to composition\, Freedman crafts each tune around strong melodic ideas\, leaving plenty of room for improvisation\, interaction\, and individual expression. \n\n\n\nThe album features a stellar rhythm section of two highly respected musicians: JUNO Award-winning drummer Max Senitt and seasoned bassist Chris Adriaanse. Senitt’s energetic and versatile drumming brings spark\, drive\, and rhythmic vitality to the music\, while Adriaanse’s warm\, rounded tone and steady\, propulsive groove provide a rich foundation for the compositions. Acclaimed pianist Matt Newton adds colour\, texture\, and depth throughout the album\, combining sophisticated harmonic accompaniment with dazzling\, fiery solos. A special addition to the recording was the dynamic flutist Anh Phung\, whose distinctive style and expressive playing bring an extra dimension to A Child’s Smile\, Reconciliation\, and Meeting of the Minds. \n\n\n\nThe album was recorded live off the floor over two days in February 2026\, at Canterbury Music Studios by veteran recording engineer Julian Decorte. Now sadly closed\, Canterbury was highly regarded within the jazz community – an ideal environment to capture the musicians’ performances with clarity\, warmth\, and authenticity. The album was mixed and mastered by acclaimed engineer David Travers-Smith\, a multiple JUNO Award winner\, who worked closely with Mike to achieve the best possible balance and sound. His exceptional attention to detail and ability to bring out the character of each instrument helped shape the album’s rich\, cohesive sonic identity. \n\n\n\nOur Time in Space is a collection of tunes that are varied and engaging\, familiar in spirit yet never predictable.
